Trustworthiness MAIN IDEA Trustworthiness is a trait of good character. Gabriel and Tuan are taking a quiz. Gabriel studied for the quiz and feels prepared. Tuan tries to look at Gabriel's quiz, but Gabriel covers his answers. Gabriel shows trustworthiness and integrity by not allowing Tuan to look at his answers. If you are honest and truthful, other people will trust you. You are worthy of trust, or trustworthy. If you are assigned to work on a project with other students, and every day you show up on time with your part of the work complete, your team members will trust you. When you borrow a dollar for lunch and return it the next day, you show trustworthiness. If you tell the truth, do not cheat or steal, you are trustworthy. Trustworthy people are reliable. They can be counted on, or relied on, to do what is expected and what they say they will do. They show up on time, always tell the truth, and demonstrate that they can be trusted. If you always bring in your completed homework, your teacher will rely on you to come to class prepared. You demonstrate reliability. Trustworthy people have integrity. Integrity is the quality of doing what you know is right. Imagine you see a student leave her wallet on the lunch table at school. Would you return it immediately? If you would, you show integrity. You are doing the right thing. Being loyal makes you trustworthy. A loyal friend will not say, or allow others to say, untrue or unkind things about you. You can be loyal to your school and your community by always acting with integrity and citizenship. READING CHECK Identify Name two characteristics of trustworthiness. Respect MAIN IDEA Good character is demonstrated through respect. Dipali and Lorinda are good friends. Lorinda asks Dipali to come to her house for a party. When Dipali arrives, she sees that everyone, including Lorinda, is drinking alcohol. Dipali knows she shouldn't be drinking alcohol and decides she needs to leave. Lorinda begins teasing Dipali because she chooses not to drink alcohol. Soon other people at the party also tease Dipali. Dipali leaves the party and goes home. She shows respect for herself by choosing not to do something that might risk her health. A person who shows respect considers the feelings of others. That person also shows respect for his or her own feelins. Think about how you want to be treated, and treat others the same way. You show respect with good manners. You show respect by listening to the points of view of others, even when they are different from yours. Showing respect for others also means being tolerant of the differences of others. Our world is made up of people with different cultures and backgrounds. Learning about people who have different backgrounds can enrich our lives. A person who is uncomfortable with the differences of others may show prejudice. Prejudice is an opinion or fear formed without facts or full knowledge. Prejudice is a behavior that can lead to violence. When a group of people share the same prejudice they may begin to feel that the prejudice is accepted. This may escalate their behavior to include violence. Violence can be directed at people who are different ethnic group, racial background, or gender. It can also be directed at people who sexual preferences are different from the group. Respect begins with self-respect. You show self-respect by leading a healthy life. You stay away from high-risk behaviors, such as sexual activity, or tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. You show respect for your body by eating healthful foods, and getting plenty of physical activity and rest. Respecting Others You have probably heard the adage, no two people are alike. This statement recognizes that we are all different. Each of us is unique. Our personalities are formed by our unique experiences. This includes our family background, culture, and likes and dislikes. Some people are curious about the differences between people. These people feel that learning about other cultures enriches their lives. Other people are less comfortable with the differences of others. They may want show prejudice against people who are different. An example of this is making the decision to dislike another person because of skin color, religion, or cultural background. The goal of this behavior is to make a person who is different feel ashamed. That person may also be afraid that physical violence might be possible. When violence occurs because of prejudice, it can be considered a hate crime (a crime committed against another person or group based on racial, religious, or sexual background.). Discrimination can take many forms. One form is showing prejudice against people of another race, religion, or culture. Another form is gender-based discrimination. Females are usually the target of this type of discrimination. Females may be told that they aren’t good at certain subjects, such as Math or Science. Males may tell jokes about females that are intended to cause hurt feelings. These are examples of gender discrimination and harassment. Prejudice affects the person or group that is discriminated against, and the individuals who display discrimination. Showing prejudice creates a barrier to developing healthy relationships. When people judge others they show their own fear of people who are different. Showing curiosity and tolerance of the differences of others enables each person to be though to as unique. Behaving in a way that discriminates against others is against the law. If a person commits a violent act because of prejudice, that person could go to jail for committing a hate crime. READING CHECK Recall Name two ways to show respect for others. Respect Liking and respecting yourself is important to good mental health. However, it is hard to do this when you make a decision that goes against your values. When you are faced with a difficult choice, you want to earn the respect of others, but more importantly, you want to respect yourself. Making healthy decisions shows that you respect yourself and your health.
