Dela Cruz, Alfred Espina, Kenneth CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction This Chapter of the research paper presents the problem and its background. It includes the Background of the Study, Setting of the Study, Theoretical Framework, Conceptual Framework, Statement of the Problem, Hypothesis, Significance of the Study, Scope and Limitation of the Study and Definition of Terms. The quality of Education and the system of our Educational Department is getting worse including the low quality of education, lack of the affordability and high-dropout rates. According to Philstar, At least 90% of the Filipino Children aged 10 struggled to read or understand simple text. It proves that our country is suffering to Education crisis. Filipino students were still among the world's weakest in math, reading, and science, according to the global assessment, with the country ranking 77th out of 81 countries and performing worse than the global average in all categories (www.bworldonline.com). Lack of focus is one of the keys of this problem because of the distractions, overloaded work and a fatigue of students because of long hours of class including the Extracurricular Activities. Our study aims to investigate “The Impact of Extracurricular Activities on Social and Academic Development of High School Students at Philsin College Rizal” on how they handle struggles on schedules and 1 keeping up with the lessons and activities despite long hours of classes and overloaded work. Extracurricular Activities including Sports participation play an important role in School performance and developments of Students. Participating in Extracurricular Activities develops Social, Emotional Skills and gives Students the opportunity to show their strengths in other areas. Participation in Sports and Academic Activities strengthens the Students to develop their potentials and skills in communicating, sportsmanships and leadership. The primary objective of this study is to explore the Impacts of Extracurricular Activities on Social and Academic Development of students. By having responsibilities both for Extracurricular and Academic purposes, this study seeks to provide insights to our School, Educators, Managements, Parents and Learners of Philsin College Rizal. It is important to know the importance of the impact of Extracurricular Activities not only on learning but also on the mental health of the students who participate because they spend time, effort and their health. The Researchers will conduct Surveys to High School Students of Philsin College Rizal that will serve as respondents and help us to analyze what are the difficulties by participating in this kind of activity. By conducting and learning this Research it will also be the wake up call for us to make adjustments and make a solution to enhance our quality of Education not just through Extracurricular Activities but to the whole thing in Education. The adjustments by the Administrators, Educators and Learners will play significant roles to make Education more affordable and more efficient. 2 Setting of the Study Figure 1. The study will take place in Philsin College Rizal Incorporated 178 B.A. Pahati Ave. Barangay Dalig, Teresa Rizal, under the Management of Mr. Jason Pahati Communication Skills and Local Council Members. The Philsin College was founded in 1985, for the instruction and training of the youth in all branches of maritime. As of today, with two campuses and over six academic programs, the academic institution has gone far beyond its founders' vision in building steps towards the dreams and goals of the Filipino youth. 3 Theoretical Framework This Theoretical Framework is guided from the previous study research theory based on (Harry Mars, 2022) which is the impact of extracurriculars on students. This study found that "Students were motivated by their extracurricular activity while excelling in their classes" which was also guided by the theory of Alexander Astin's (1999) His theory of involvement entails the amount of physical and psychological energy that the student devotes to the academic experience; this is a practical observation to improve administrators and faculty design more effective learning environments. This theory claims that extracurricular activities may improve physical and intellectual stamina in addition to achieving a balanced capability in academic activities and in extracurricular activities. 4 Conceptual Framework INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT Profile of the Respondents (1) Choosing Observation according to their: Respondents from regarding the level High School of stress among the Name Students Impact of Age. The input is the profile of respondents according to their Gender, Age, Strand, Sex and relevancy in the Study Accommodation of Extracurricular Activity in Social and Academic Performance. The Process continues with the following steps: (1) Choosing respondents from High School Students (2) Conducting Surveys (3) Organization of responses (4) Data analysis/Investigation of the study. All of these will result in the formation of the output which includes (1) Observation regarding to level of stress 5 among the impact of Extracurricular activity to Social and Academic Development High School Students at Philsin College Rizal Inc. (2) Factors contributed to Social and Academic Performance of High School Students. (3) Findings of significant effects of Extracurricular activity to future plans of High School Students. Statement of the Problem The study will basically seek to explore Extracurricular Activities outside the instructional curriculum at Philsin College Rizal Inc. that influence the social and academic growth of high school students. Precisely, the study will look to answer the following questions: Research Questions: The research will seek how the extracurricular activities at Philsin College of Rizal Inc. influenced the social and academic performance of high school students. 1. What is the profile of the respondents according to their: Which of the following demographic characteristics of the respondents needs to be considered: - Name - Age - Sex - Strand 6 2. To what extent are the high school students of Philsin College Rizal Inc. stressed out? How does involvement in extracurricular activities affect the students' level of stress? - What is the relationship between the type and frequency of extracurricular activities to the perceived stress of the students? 3. Study of the factors affecting social and academic performance of high school students with reference to extra co curricular activities. It also raises the issue of how one or the other extracurricular affects the abilities of students for interpersonal communication in teams and the understanding. - How extracurricular activities influence other academic results - academic grade, attendance, and behavior in class. 4. Extracurricular activity to what extent influences the chances for the further level of high school students? - A promise for the extracurricular activities: What effects does it have on the students' career prospects and or their desire for further education? - Thus, what is the nature of a student's future(s) and students' future-making through interest-based out-of-class learning activities? Thus, the answers to these questions will provide more understandable results regarding the extracurricular activity's impact on high school students' formation of social skills, their academic achievements, stress rate, and their further plans. 7 Research Hypothesis There is no engaging in Extracurricular Activities that can lead to improvements in social skills development for High School Students and their Social Growth in Philsin College Rizal. Significance of the Study The result of this study will be beneficial to these following: Students Comprehending the Impact of Extracurricular Activities on Students Social and Academic Progress can enable them to make well-informed decisions about their Participation, which may result in improved Personal Development and Academic Achievement. Parents Reduce worries about their kids spending time on things that aren’t Academic. Students will be able to focus more on their studies than on other things and their expenses will be reduced. Educators This study can be used by Educators to support the inclusion of Extracurricular Activities in the curriculum by emphasizing the benefits they have on student’s growth. School Management This can be used by School Officials to evaluate the success of current extracurricular activities and pinpoint opportunities for development or growth. 8 Community The result of this study will help the community to be more productive and open minded in the future when it comes to participating both in Academic Developments and Extracurricular Activities. Scope and Limitation of the Study This research focuses on finding out the primary factors of Extracurricular Activities that affect High School Students of Philsin College Rizal and the performance of students. Recent studies and researches will be used as reference in finding out what affects the Extracurricular on performance of High School Students. In terms of the involved relevant individuals and aspects in the study, here includes High School Students, supporting guardians and elements associated by external factors such as on social, economic and environmental side. This research will not extend to the advanced factors that affect students such as mentally and emotionally behaviors of students by taking the Extracurricular Activities. The focus on the system of Extracurricular Activities will only have an extent of that to one that Philsin College Rizal currently maintains. 9 Definition of Terms Academic of, relating to, or associated with an academy or school especially of higher learning.
