Assignment Your Task: To create a visual representation (a collection of pictures, symbols and images) that reflects your identity as you see it. After reading about the different characteristics that contribute to individual identity in Exploring Globalization, find pictures, video (original or clips), symbols, images and phrases that represent the things that contribute to who you are. Use a wide variety of sources and images. Your representation should ‘tell a story’, and it should be accurate and true of yourself. Your personal ‘story’ should be clear to anyone looking at your presentation. The work of art is a self-portrait — a portrait of the artist by the artist herself. But Joane Cardinal-Schubert’s self-portrait is different. Rather than portraying herself at a particular moment, Cardinal-Schubert uses words and images to create a collage that shows the people and events, ideas and beliefs, that played an important role in her developing sense of herself. Before and After shows her becoming who she is and indicates that her identity is a work in progress. It is not yet complete. In the portrait, Cardinal-Schubert portrays herself as she shapes — and is shaped by — others. Identity Identity can be described as a collective set of characteristics by which a person (or group) is definitively recognizable or known. Each of us have our own unique identity shaped by our surroundings. In defining our self image, we take all the things that appeal to us in the world to create how we want to see ourselves.
