Employment issues: bigger dilemma in hiring- Due to pressure from friend, politician, senior managers etc. Other dilemma when someone appointed on background check found to have forged qualification/experience certificate privacy issues regarding confidentiality of personal life, health and safety supervisor should provide safe workplace and managing production issues. Performance appraisal- bias Restructuring and layoff: Safety and health issues due to hazardous work environment Benefits of managing ethics in workplace are: Substantially improved society, ethics programs help maintain moral course in turbulent times, cultivate strong teamwork and productivity, support employees’ growth and meaning, polices are legal, help avoid criminal acts “of omission” and can lower fines, help manage values associated with quality management, strategic planning and diversity management benefit needs more attention. Ethics program promotes stronger public image, legitimizes managerial actions, strengthens the coherence and balance of the organizational culture, greater impact of values and it is the right thing to do. Ethics in HRM- Global context: custodian and driver of ethics of organization, increases credibility with their stakeholders, no ambiguity and promotes value-based behavior. Guidelines for managing ethics in the workplace includes- recognizing that ethics management is a process, bottom line is to accomplish preferred fair and just behaviors in the workplace, to avoid ethical dilemmas by developing code of ethics and code of conduct, making ethics decisions in groups and make decisions public, integrate ethics management with other management practices, use cross functional teams when developing and implementing ethics management program. Value forgiveness and try to operate ethically and correct mistake immediately P. 1 Internal Key role/ responsibility in ethics management: The organization’s chief executive must support ethics program, establish ethics committee at the board level, ethics committee at operational level, assign/ develop ethics officer, ombudsman and one person’s ultimate accountability is required to be established. Code of ethics: Develop code of ethics- guidelines – review values, relevant laws and regulations, review top three to four traits of a highly ethical and successful product or service in your area, identify values needed to address current issues in workplace, behaviors needed to resolve any ethical issues, review SWOT analysis and values and behaviors needed to improve strengths, shore up weaknesses, take advantage of opportunities and guard against threats. Consider expectations of stakeholders and be trustworthy, respectful, caring being just and fair in transactions and relationships and civic virtu and citizenship to be practiced. Announce code of ethics and review every year. Develop code of conduct based on code of ethics. Update policies and procedures to produce behaviors preferred from the code of conduct, manage values, address ethical dilemmas, reward ethical behavior, training about ethical management program, grievance policy, ethics “hotline” and review every year. Ethics tools Training of supervisors- orientation to new employees, involve staff in review of ethics code, review policies, resolving complex ethical dilemmas, include ethical performance in performance appraisal criteria and give all staff copy of “complete guide to ethics management” free. ______________________________________________________________________ P. 2 Internal
