Basically, character is defined as a psychological notion that refers to all the habitual ways of feeling and reacting of a person. **[TRAITS]** · A trait is a distinguishing characteristic or quality, typically one belonging to a person. Traits can be physical, psychological, or behavioral, and they help to define and describe individuals in various contexts. **[PERSONALITY]** · Personality refers to the unique set of characteristics, behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that define an individual and differentiate them from others. It encompasses a wide range of attributes that influence how a person interacts with the world and perceives themselves. **[CHARACTER FORMATION]** · A process by which the individual through interaction of biologically transmitted predispositions with the environment also known as ***Character Building***. · It is deeply internalized patterns of values, attitudes and the consequent actions that are often established in precognitive times of life. **CONTRIBUTING FACTORS FOR CHARACTER FORMATION** **1. Parental Influence** Parental influence is the most important of all the factors responsible for personality development The way parents behave with the child, how much he is allowed to socialize, the kind of culture he I subjected to by them, and the emotional make-up of his parents, all these have a great bearing on the child\'s mental growth. In the early stage of their human existence, children adapt their parent\'s mannerisms. It is their parental guidance and discipline that creates the kind of character, personality and attitude the child has. Parents should make sure that the child incorporates the positive emotions in his personality and stays away from the negative ones. À child needs both his parents, to develop his personality. An absentee father can be a negative influence on the child. To make a child a confident, positive person, parents should avoid being too authoritative, trying to discipline excessively, **3. School Environment** To perfect the total development of a child\'s character and attitude, besides the home environment, a child\'s school environment to plays a major role in shaping a child\'s personality. Once a child starts going to school, he learns how to interact and deal with his peers. He comes to know how to engage in \"playing\" according to the rules and regulations. He gets educated, learns how to read, write and communicate effectively. A child\'s personality is greatly influenced by the way he is treated at school, both by his teachers as well as his peers. The school reinforce the education that the child needs that home fails to provide. 4\. **Culture** Everyone has different character and values because of the different cultures where everyone is exposed. Sociologists found out that different cultures have different values, and a child grows up with them, sub-consciously absorbing the same. Influence of culture in personality and social development cannot be ignored. Those who were born and grown up in western countries are influenced to be individualistic and competitive, while those children brought up in Asian, Atro and South American countries are taught to be cooperative. Infancy, toddlerhood, preschool and school age are the various phases that a child passes through and each of these stages has its own share of problems and challenges, which a child has to overcome, with his parent\'s assistance, to turn out to be a well-developed personality. **THE MOST WELL-KNOWN TRAITS AND ATTITUDES OF THE FILIPINO** Filipinos has one of the best traits in the world one of you must know. Although they have been colonized by several countries, core values from their ancestors remained intact and is still applied up to this time. Here are some of the following traits of a Filipino. The term \"[Filipino traits and characteristics]\" refers to the distinctive qualities and values that are commonly associated with people from the Philippines. These traits are deeply rooted in the country\'s rich cultural heritage, history, and social norms. **[POSITIVE TRAITS]** HOSPITALITY \- A Filipino trait of being receptive and generous to others. RESPECT \- A Filipino trait of being courteous both in words and in actions to the people especially to older people. **STRONG FAMILY TIES** \- A Filipino trait of giving highest importance to family above other thing. A trait wherein family members should be taken care and supported regardless of whether he/she did something wrong, a family member must give attention and should not be abandoned. **RELIGIOUS** \- Most Filipinos possess strong conformance of their religious belief in actions and in words. **GENEROSITY AND HELPFUL** \- Filipinos are well-known for being generous. This is observed when one person has nothing, and they tend to share what they have to them even when they only have little. **HARDWORKING** \- Filipinos are hardworking people to the fact that they are willing to work several times to almost whole day just to feed their families. **LOVING AND CARING** \- Filipinos are the sweetest and loving people in the world. **FLEXIBILITY, ADAPTABILITY AND CREATIVITY** \- Filipinos have a great capacity to adjust and to circumstances and the surrounding environment both physical and social. **ABILITY TO SURVIVE** \- Despite grinding poverty, many Filipinos survive. They can even make a livelihood from garbage dumps. Filipinos have survived many invaders, oppressors and natural calamities, and have come out with hope and determination to carve out our existence a new. **DEBT OF GRATITUDE (UTANG NA LOOB)** \- It is persisting in the Filipino psyche. When people give a favor then he will surely remember it even if he already turned the favor. **[NEGATIVE TRAITS]** **FATALISM** \- Also known as "Bahala Na" or "Come What May" Attitude. \- It refers to "Kanya-kanya Syndrome". When helpless, people tend not to act to solve the problems. They usually do not plan or plan for contingencies. Examples are fixing what needs to be fixed or saving money for future expenditures. \- The "bahala na" attitude is the outcome of the mañana habit when the tasks are left undone. **NINGAS COGON** \- Filipino start something eagerly but lose momentum and don't tend to finish or reach long-term goals. **EUPHEMISM** \- A Filipino way of substituting a word or phrase that is thought to be offensive or harsh with mild and acceptable one to not offend or hurt another person. **FILIPINO TIME** \- It means "always late", a Filipino attitude impreciseness towards time. **GAYA-GAYA ATTITUDE** \- A Filipino attitude imitating or copying other culture specifically in mode of dressing, language, fashion or even haircut. **JACKPOT MENTALITY** \- A "get rich quick" mentality of some Filipino who would rather engage in fast ways of acquiring money than through hardwork and sacrifice by getting in lottery, gambling and others. **KAPALARAN VALUES** \- A Filipino trait of accepting his fate by believing that everything is written in his palm. Such traits contribute to lack initiative and perseverance among Filipinos. **OVERSENSITIVE** \- Filipinos have the tendency to be irritated easily or hurt upon hearing some criticism or comment. **LACK OF SPORTMANSHIP** \- It means by not accepting defeat in competition but rather putting the blame to other opponents or to the sport officials. **TSAMBA LANG ATTITUDE** \- simplicity by declaring that his/her accomplishments are results of luck and not from perseverance and ability. **HYPOCRISY** \- A Filipino trait where criticism to others' failure to live with the moral standards of the society are inevitable. **GOSSIPING** \- Mostly Filipinos are fond of talking others' business such as secrets, flaws and failures of others. Worse, as gossip passed around, they tend to be twisted until the final story becomes too far from the original. **BLAMING** \- Filipinos can sometimes be too self-righteous. When mistakes happen, we intentionally point to the others. This trait destroys teamwork, and reliability becomes an issue. **SELFISHNESS** \- Most Filipinos are insensitive to the needs and situations of others. **ATTENTION TAKER** \- Filipinos are fun and people loving race. Thus, attracting attention is natural for them. Nevertheless, it is a different thing to be an "epal" or "kapalmuks" -- simply, being an attention grabber. Example: butting in conversations as a know-it-all or by scandalous. Politicians who are campaigning their candidacy before the election period starts. **LIVING BEYOND THEIR MEANS (SOCIAL CLIMBING)** \- Most Filipinos want to live an elite lifestyle, that comes up with overspending by buying such as designer clothes, bags and shoes that intends to loans and credits and bankruptcy. **PASSIVITY (LACK OF LEADERSHIP)** \- Lack of initiative for change is also one of the traits that need to erase in the attitude of a Filipino. Sometimes they complain against the government, yet they do not do anything. Common Filipinos also lack confidence and courage. **LACK OF DISCIPLINE** \- Pollution, traffic rules and following the laws are things that Filipinos tend to ignore. **BEING ONION SKINNED OR TOO SENSITIVE** -Another habit or attitude that we need to change is our being too proud which usually results to being oversensitive. If we think highly of ourselves, then we have the tendency to put a wall around us and that a signboard on our forehead saying, \"I must be respected.\" Therefore, when someone makes a joke and a not so positive comment about us, we feel like !! are not respected and we get offended. If all people!! the country do not know how to accept constructing criticism, then we can never expect unity. **Value of Filipino Traits and Characteristics.** **Family-Oriented**: \- Family is central to Filipino life. There is a strong sense of loyalty and duty towards family members, and extended families often live close together or maintain frequent contact. **Resilience**: \- Filipinos are renowned for their ability to remain positive and hopeful in the face of adversity. This resilience is often seen in their capacity to overcome challenges and maintain a sense of optimism. **Joyful and Fun-Loving**: -Filipinos have a reputation for their love of celebration and enjoyment. Festivals, parties, and community gatherings are an essential part of Filipino life, often marked by music, dance, and laughter. **Strong Sense of Community**: -There is a deep sense of belonging and mutual support within communities. Filipinos often help each other out, and communal bonds are strong. ***Delicadeza* (Sense of Propriety[)]** **-** Delicadeza\" refers to the sensitivity to how one\'s actions may affect others and behaving with a sense of propriety and honor.
