# File and Folder Encryption (1 of 2) - In Windows, files and folders can be encrypted using **Windows Encrypted File System (EFS)** - Works only with the NTFS file system and business/professional editions of Windows - If a folder is marked for encryption, every file created in or copied to the folder will be encrypted - An encrypted file remains encrypted if moved to an unencrypted folder - To encrypt a folder or file: - Right-click it and open its Properties box - On the General tab, click Advanced - In the Advanced Attributes box, check Encrypt contents to secure data and click OK - In File Explorer or Windows Explorer, encrypted file and folder names are displayed in green by default
