ALTERNATIVE BUILDING CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS ARC 180 TABLE OF CONTENTS 01 02 03 04 DOORS DOORS DOORS DOORS 05 06 07 08 WINDOWS WINDOWS WINDOWS WINDOWS DOORS DOOR It is the screen/board used to seal an opening in to the building in between spaces within the building. It is openable barrier at the entrance to building, rooms or other spaces such as cupboards that allow people, vehicles or goods to enter and leave. There are many different types of doors, all with different purposes. DOOR Provides safety to occupants. Allow light and air. Insulates the exterior noise and loudness. Resists the external temperature. Provides the external temperature. DOOR Frame: The immovable part of the window that is installed in the wall. Head: The top or uppermost horizontal part of frame. Sill: Lowermost horizontal part in a frame. Jamb/Post: The vertical part of the frame. Door leaf/Shutters: The openable and movable part of the door. Panel: A subdivision of the shutter Top rail: Uppermost horizontal part in a shutter. Lock rail/Middle rail: Horizontal member in a shutter where lock arrangement is fixed. DOOR Bottom rail: Lowermost horizontal part in a shutter. Style: Vertical outside member in a shutter. Hinge side: Opposite of the closing side, the side of the door leaf with hinges. Mullion: Vertical member running in a shutter. Closing side: The side of the door leaf that closes into the locking side of the frame. Strike plate: The middle "hole" in the jamb that the 3- point lock fits into. Glazing bead: Beading that fixes and mounts the glass panel into the leaf. DOOR DOOR INTERNAL DOORS FOR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS: 0.9 M X 2 M EXTERNAL DOORS FOR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS : 1.0 M X 2.0 DOORS FOR BATH ROOMS AND WATER CLOSETS IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS : 0.7 M X 2.0 M DOORS IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS, VIZ. HOSPITALS, LIBRARIES CINEMAS, ETC. : 1.2 M X 2.25 M DOORS IN GARAGES: 2.5 M X 2.25 M DOOR AUTOMATIC DOOR Opens and closes automatically either by electric power or spring power, activated by sensors (e.g. pressure, motion, infrared beam, push button, etc.). DOOR BI-FOLD DOOR Comprising several sections that open in concert and fold up against one another. DOOR FIRE DOOR A door that is intended (when closed) to resist the passage of fire and/or gaseous products of combustion. DOOR FRENCH DOOR A frame around one or more panels (either transparent or translucent). DOOR HALF DOOR Also known as a Dutch door, this consists of a door that is divided in half horizontally and is often used in stables. DOOR PIVOT DOOR A door supported on a bearing away from the edge rather than on hinges. DOOR SINGLE DOOR A single rigid panel that fills the doorway and swings open either outwards, inwards or bi- directional. DOOR DOUBLE DOOR The doorway is formed by two adjacent leafs, each hinged on its outermost edges and opening out from the middle. DOOR ROLLING DOOR Typically made of steel, this type of door is usually found in warehouses, garages, shops, and so on. DOOR SLIDING DOOR Constructed on steel sliders and typically made of glass. They slide to open, sometimes sliding into a concealed pocket in a adjacent wall. DOOR SWING DOOR Swings in one or both direction. May have single or double shutter. Used in public buildings where people are in rush. WINDOWS WINDOW A window is a vented barrier that is secured in a wall opening. Facilitates the entry of natural light indoors and enables the occupants to enjoy the views outside. They serve to keep the building cross-ventilated. If the opening is not less than 10% of the floor area, then the room is naturally lighted. WINDOW Frame: The fixed part of the window that is installed in the wall. Mullion: The vertical element that splits the window into several sub-elements. Sill: The horizontal part of the window frame. Jambs: The vertical parts of the frame. Sash: The openable and movable part of the door. Glazing bar: A bar or beading that fixes the glass panel. Spacer bar: The divider inside the glass. Traditionally used because working with large glass panes were impractical. WINDOW WINDOWS The selection of size, shape, location and the number of windows to be provided in a room depends upon the following considerations: Size of room Location of the room and its utility. Architectural treatment to be given to the building. Direction of wind and its speed. Climatic factors prevailing at the site such as humidity and temperature. WINDOWS SASH A sash window is the traditional style of window in the United Kingdom. The space between the rails is divided into small panels by mean of small timber members called sash bars or glazing bars. WINDOWS CORNER WINDOW Corner window is placed in a corner of the room of the house. Here two windows meet at a corner or edge of a structure. The two adjacent surfaces of the house contain segments of the window which meet at the edge of the surfaces. WINDOWS DORMER WINDOW A dormer is a roofed structure, often containing a window, that projects vertically beyond the plane of a pitched roof. A dormer window (also called dormer) is a form of roof window. WINDOWS CASEMENT WINDOW (NORMAL GLAZED OPENING) Normal glazed opening: clear vision. A casement is a window that is attached to its frame by one or more hinges. WINDOWS JALLS OR PERFORATIONS It is just an obstructed vision (provides privacy). JALOUSIE A jalousie window or louvre window is a window composed of parallel glass, acrylic, or wooden louvers set in a frame. WINDOWS CLERESTORY A clerestory is a high section of wall that contains windows above eye level. Also known as overstorey window. Allows light and air inside the room. WINDOWS STAINED GLASS A window composed of pieces of colored glass, transparent, translucent or opaque, frequently portraying persons or scenes. Typically separated by lead glazing bars. These are especially common in churches. WINDOWS DIOCLETIAN WINDOW Thermal or Diocletian windows are large semicircular windows which are usually divided into three lights by two mullions. The central compartment is often wider than the two side lights on either side of it. WINDOWS FRENCH WINDOW A French window is a large door- sized lattice light, typically set in pairs or multiples thereof. They often overlook a terrace and are commonly used in modern houses. WINDOWS BAY WINDOW A multi-panel window, with at least three panels set at different angles to create a protrusion from the wall line. Such windows project outside the external wall. Provides wide vision. Slope angle is between 30-45 degrees. WINDOWS MULTI-LIT WINDOW A window glazed with small panels of glass separated by wooden or lead glazing bars. Due to the historic unavailability of large panes of glass, the multi-lit was the most common window style until the beginning of the 20th century, and is still used in traditional architecture. WINDOWS MULTI-LIT WINDOW A window glazed with small panes of glass separated by wooden or lead glazing bars. Due to the historic unavailability of large panes of glass, the multi- lit was the most common window style until the beginning of the 20th century, and is still used in traditional architecture. WINDOWS TRIPLE-PANED GLASS These have been commercially manufactured and marketed with claims of additional benefit but have not become common. The increased insulating air space of triple-pane glass delivers even better energy efficiency and noise reduction. WINDOWS SKYLIGHT A fixed flat or slope window used for daylighting, built into a roof structure that is out of reach. Allows light to admit evenly all over the room. Lead gutters are arranged to frame to make it as waterproof.
