STYLISTIC ELEMENTS FOR GOOD ACADEMIC WRITING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, you are expected to achieve the following: 1. Identify and apply the different stylistic elements of good academic writing. 2. Develop a socio-political analysis paper or a position paper. 3. Write a research-based documented essay observingstylistic conventions of academic writing. ACADEMIC WRITING: Refers to a style of expression that researchers use to define the intellectual boundaries of their disciplines and specific areas of expertise. 2 STYLISTIC ELEMENTS OF GOOD ACADEMIC WRITING LANGUAGE -use language that fits your AUDIENCE and matches your PURPOSE -Use clear topic sentences and well-structured paragraphs -Avoid using in-group jargons, idiomatic expressions, and euphemisms 2 STYLISTIC ELEMENTS OF GOOD ACADEMIC WRITING ACADEMIC TONE. -Tone refers to the writer's voice in a written work -Present the arguments of others objectively -Avoid making broad generalizations 2 STYLISTIC ELEMENTS OF GOOD ACADEMIC WRITING ACADEMIC DICTION -linguistic choices a writer makes to effectively convey an idea or a standpoint. -Awareness of the words you use is vital. -Use concrete and specific words that convey precise meaning. -Be consistent with your labels. 2 -Use third person POV ACADEMIC DICTION (AVOID THE USE OF THE FOLLOWING) -Slang expressions -cliche phrases -metaphors or figure of speech -colloquialisms -jargons -platitudes -pejoratives -contractions 2 STYLISTIC ELEMENTS OFGOOD ACADEMIC WRITING PUNCTUATIONS. -punctuation marks are used very deliberately in sentence and paragraph constructions.
