Bone Features General Anatomic Term Explanation and Example – Describe what the Structure term would look like and provide at least one example. Pictures are accepted. Articular Condyle A bump/ projection at the end of a bone that Surfaces forms a joint with another bone. There is a lateral and medial condyle on the end of the femur. Head The rounded projection at the end of a bone which forms a joint. There is a head on the rib that connects to the spine and there is one on the femur to connect to the hip bone. Trochlea A groove on an end of a bone that allows movement in joints. There is one on the end of the humerus that interacts with the radius and ulna to have an elbow joint. Depressions Fossa (Pl., Fossae) A depression in a bone. There are 2 fossae on the scapula, the supraspinous and the infraspinous. Sulcus X Projections Crest A raised part of a bone edge. On the coxal for tendons bones there is an iliac crest on the top of the and ligament ilium of the bone. attachment Epicondyle A bump on a long bone where tendons and ligaments attach to muscles. The humerus has a medial and lateral epicondyle. Line Lines/impressions on bone from texture of surrounding tissues. Or the epiphyseal line. Process A bony projection that is the attachment points for muscles, tendons, or ligaments. The alveolar process of the maxilla, the area above the cupids bow. Trochanter A bony projection that is an attachment site for muscles and connective tissue. The greater and lesser trochanters on the femur, near the hip joint. Tubercle A small bumb on the bone. A greater and lesser tubercle on the head of the humerus. Tuberosity A rounded area on a bone where muscles and ligaments attach. The ulnar tuberosity below the “u.” Openings Canal A tubular passageway. The carotid canal in the temporal bone, visible in an inferior view. Fissure A narrow split or groove. There is a superior and inferior orbital fissure in the eye socket. Foramen (Pl., A hole in the bone. The foramen magnum in the Foramina) skull that connects the brain and spinal cord. Sinus Hollow spaces in the bones. Sphenoidal sinus behind the eyes, in the sphenoid bone.
