Biology Notes 2.5 cm is an inch 1/17/25 Definition: - Resistance means how likely it is to shift and - Resilience how fast it will bounce back Biodiversity loss: - \#1 cause is habitat destruction/ degradation - Direct Exploitation (Ex: overfishing) - Introduced species (Ex: acting on a problem like zebra mussels are clogging dams which affect everyone.) - Disease (if we don't change our ways nothing will help diseases spread) Coral Reefs: - What's happening - Coral bleaching- ocean acidification and warming - Loss of Reefs- disease - Climate change - This stresses coral reefs out which makes them sick like humans. Conservation Efforts - Single species approach - Keystone species - Ex: prayer dogs are important because they build tunnels underground and help other species like rabbits, snakes, worms, etc. We protect keystone species, and we protect others with it. Frogs' biggest threat: - Declines are due to a single pathogen (chytrid fungus) - \#1 habitat destruction - Deforestation causes this loss (taking away trees and leaf litter) - Losing leaf litter and trees kills amphibians and reptiles Effecting the Earth: - Starbucks doesn't buy organic coffees and kills things while in this process - Caribou get real coffee beans from coffee forests which is good for our planet. - Eating red meat is bad for you and the environment Ecology: (study of our home) - study of all the complex interrelation referred to by Darwin as the conditions for the struggle for existence. - Oikos (home) - Ology (knowledge) Ecology spans - Molecular question - Medical questions - Agriculture questions - Geological questions Climate diagram: - Average precipitation (side) - Average temperature (side) - Bottom= months - \^ How to know what part you are in the desert, rainforest, etc.?
