Western and Classical Art Traditions ART 9 – Lesson 1 – Quarter 1 Prepared by: Mrs. Julie Ann S. Pamon Look at the picture below. Have you seen similar shapes of buildings and things before? Have you noticed buildings and things in your community whose shapes and forms resemble the ones in the picture? What words will you use to describe these objects? One of the words that could aptly describe these pictures is “Ancient”. Ancient means very old or antique. It is the opposite of modern or new. The arts of ancient Greece could still be considered very important even in this digital age because they show us where prototypes come from. Prototypes are the original ideas of forms in which later ideas and forms are based. I. Ancient Art What are the distinct characteristics of ancient art? People who lived thousands and thousands of years ago used pictures instead of words to tell a story or send a message. Look at the drawing on the right side. The animal figures were partly drawn and cut into the rock. It was found on the wall of a cave in Lascaux, France, 25, 000 years ago. The first people to draw pictures had no written language. Like the cavemen, other people who lived long ago used pictures instead of words to tell a story or send a message. II. Classical Art What is art during the Classical period? The term Classical may be applied to all art and music from a specific period in history (1750 – 1820). In the strictest sense, this is a term used to characterize the art, literature, and aesthetics created by the ancient Greeks and Romans. In the visual arts, a sense of control in the handling of themes and a sense of order and promotion of forms are observed.
