Job Purpose To provide comprehensive primary health services in support of the total effort of the health care delivery system with a view to achieve equity in coverage and quality care especially in Health Centres in the rural areas and Polyclinics/Hospitals in the urban setting. Job Summary Work as a member of Medical Team to provide health care and to monitor and evaluate patient care.  Collaborate with other disciplines and health care staff to ensure optimum care for clients/patients. Main Duties and Responsibilities CLINICAL Assess and prioritize patients presenting at Health Centre/polyclinic or hospital,according to their medical needs Undertake confidential patient consultations consisting of: History taking, Assessment and Diagnosis Initiate and implement care plan for patients Accurately and legibly record patients’ care and management packages Provide advice on management of conditions using knowledge from up to date evidence-based research and appropriately refer when necessary. Provide interventions- Emergency surgical invasive procedures, Administration of emergency therapies etc CLINICAL Perform minor surgical procedures: Incision of boils, Suturing of wounds. Dressing of wounds when necessary. Participate in: Ward rounds, Clinical meetings, Morbidity/mortality meetings, General staff meetings etc Offer primary care to patients with mental health problems and refer as appropriate. Perform relieving duties at Health Centres and relevant health facilities when necessary. Community Work Undertake outreach community health activities within the catchment’s area Facilitate community involvement in health programmes Play active role in Maternal and Child Welfare, Family Planning programmes and health education talks within the community. Facilitate the collection and reporting on data – socio/epidemiological morbidity and mortality at the sub-district level. Communication and Working Relationships Maintain effective communication and working relationship with colleagues and other health workers and clients. Develop working partnership networks with individuals, groups, communities and agencies within the sub- district Ensure effective dissemination of information on health programmes to staff and clients in the facility Participate in multi-professional meetings and conferences as required. Promote and safeguard the interest and well being of the patients and visitors at all times. Personal and People Development Develop and maintain continuing personal and professional development to meet the changing demands in the area of primary health services Monitor own performance against agreed objectives and standards. Participate in the staff performance appraisal exercise within the facility Keep log of own performance and in-service training log for purposes of appraisal. Management Contribute to the day-to-day management of the health centre as well as the supervision of other health stations within the sub-district. Contribute to the preparation of plans and budget and periodic reports on the activities of the health centre and other health stations in the sub-district. Contribute to devising improved job methods for increasing efficiency in the health centre. Contribute to the supervision of revenue collection as well as ensuring strict accountability at the health centre. RESPONSIBILITIES Research Responsibilities Undertake surveys. Keep up-to-date with quality developments relevant to area of work and related services Persons Specification Criteria Educational Qualification & Experience: Degree in physician assistantship and one year of internship in accredited facility plus evidence of continuous professional development(Relevant) Training in Management and Leadership(Desirable) Knowledge Knowledge of patients’ rights and responsibilities Knowledge of Health and Safety Knowledge and understanding of quality assurance issues Working knowledge of primary health care/emergency services Knowledge of health trends Knowledge and competency in district health and sub-district health care services and referral system Knowledge and competency in basic surgical procedure SKILLS Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Ability to work, lead and manage a multi- disciplinary team. Ability to organize workload and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work on own initiative.
