Curriculum Connection Name: ________________________ 24 A1.2, A1.4, A3.3, A3.5 Clothing – What clothing did they wear? The Andean women wore bright coloured clothing, including shawls, capes, skirts, and hats. The men would wear lightweight twill and cotton pants and shirts, as the weather in the Andes was hot. Brimmed hats also protected them from the sun. Transportation – How did they get around? The Andean people did not have access to wheeled vehicles or working animals – an animal that can pull a wagon or sled. Instead, they had to walk or ride llamas to get around. Unfortunately, llamas were not strong enough to carry loads over 45kg. Food The rich and elite Andean people ate corn and meat from llamas and guinea pigs. They also ate beans, sweet potatoes, quinoa, and chili peppers. The poor Andean labourers worked hard in their villages. Instead of getting money for their work, they got food from the government. Everyone was fed! Shelter - What did they live in? The Andean people made houses and buildings out of adobe bricks. Adobe bricks are made from sand, clay, water, and straw. The builders would form the adobe into rectangular shaped bricks and then let them dry in the sun. These shelters are simple to make but are not very strong. The Andes Mountains are prone to earthquakes, which makes these shelters a risk to live in. © Super Simple Sheets
