General Anatomy BMS114 Joints Definition: The areas where 2 or more bones meet (articulate). Classification of joints: According to tissue between articulating bones Fibrous Cartilaginous Synovial 1.Fibrous Definition: ❖Articulating bones connected by fibrous tissue. ❖ Not mobile. Types: 1.Suture 2.GOMPHOSIS 1. Suture Between skull Ossify with bones age 2.GOMPHOSIS Root of teeth is fixed in a socket by a fibrous membrane 2. Cartilaginous Definition: ❖ BONES UNITED BY CARTILAGE. ❖ No or limited movement. Types: 1. Primary cartilaginous 2.Secondary cartilaginous Primary cartilaginous Not Ossify mobile with age ❖Epiphyseal plate: 2.Secondary cartilaginous Limited Never ossify movement ❖Intervertebral disc 3.Synovial joint Definition: ❖Bones united by space containing synovial fluid. Characters: ❖ Freely mobile. ❖ Articular surface of the two bones covered with hyaline cartilage. ❖ Two bone separated by joint cavity filled with synovial fluid which (lubricate, allow free movement and provides nutrition). ❖Two bones surrounded by fibrous capsule. ❖There are localized thickened bands in the fibrous capsule called Capsular ligaments. ❖This Fibrous capsule lined by synovial membrane. Classification of synovial joints Synovial Synovial Synovial plane Hinge Pivot Synovial Synovial Synovial ball Ellipsoid saddle and socket Synovial Plane ❖E.g.: Intercarpal joint Synovial Hinge ❖E.g.: Elbow joint Synovial Pivot ❖E.g.: Radioulnar joint Synovial Ellipsoid ❖ Oval convexity received in elliptical concavity ❖ E.g.: wrist joint. Synovial Saddle ❖E.g.: carpo-metacarpal joint of thumb Synovial (Ball and Socket) ❖ Rounded head (ball shaped) received in cup shaped (socket) ❖ Allow Flexion & extension -----adduction & abduction…Rotation ❖ E.g.: Shoulder joint and Hip joints Quiz A B C CHOOSE THE CORRECT ANSWER: 1- Which one of the following joints belong to the fibrous joints? a.
