What it is: ALS is a nervous system disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control. Symptoms Initial symptoms can vary from trouble holding a pen to a change in voice when speaking Symptoms can begin in the muscles Muscle weakness and paralysis Difficulty chewing or swallowing Slurred speech Symptoms 1. Muscle weakness and paralysis 4. Difficulty chewing or swallowing 5. Slurred speech 6. Fatigue 7. Twitching Prognosis About 20% of the people with ALS live for around 5 years 10% survive 10 years 5% live 20 years or longer Progression doesn’t always move in a straight line. Treatments Currently there is no cure for ALS. Some medications used to treat ALS: 1) Tofersen 2) exservan 3) Dextromethorphan 4) Eblaravone 5) Rilutek These are the names of some of the medications people with ALS may take.
