    Study Notes

    Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

    • ALS is a nervous system disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control.
    • Initial symptoms vary, from trouble holding a pen to changes in voice.
    • Symptoms can begin in muscles, including stiffness, cramps, and weakness.
    • Muscle weakness and paralysis are common symptoms.
    • Difficulty chewing or swallowing, slurred speech, fatigue, and twitching are often experienced.
    • About 20% of people with ALS live for around 5 years.
    • 10% survive 10 years, and 5% live 20 years or longer.
    • Progression is not always linear.
    • Currently, there is no cure for ALS.

    Treatments

    • Several medications are used to treat ALS, including Tofersen, exservan, Dextromethorphan, Eblaravone, and Rilutek.

    Causes

    • The exact cause is unknown, but genetics play a role in some cases.
    • About 90% of ALS cases occur without a known family history.
    • Ages between 40-70 are most commonly diagnosed with ALS.

    Effects of ALS

    • ALS affects muscles and can cause loss of mobility in arms and legs, making daily tasks difficult.
    • Other effects include muscle cramps, slurred speech, fatigue, difficulty holding the head up, and potentially losing the ability to talk and walk.

    Support Groups

    • ALS societies, like the ALS Society of Saskatchewan, provide support and funding for ALS patients.
    • Monthly support groups are available in various locations such as Regina, Saskatoon, and Swift Current.
    • There is a website available for more information.

    Famous People with ALS

    • Lou Gehrig, a famous baseball player, had ALS.
    • Stephen Hawking, an acclaimed theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author, also had ALS.
