Mid-1700’s– French and Indian War– North America– French & Indians vs. Britain Ohio River's importance to the French- the Ohio River was important to the French because it provided a vital link between their claims along the Great Lakes and their settlements along the Mississippi River. What upset Native Americans when the British settled in the Ohio River Valley- because the Ohio River Valley was their territory, and was a good source of food and resources. The British cleared the land to establish farms. Treaty of Paris- After the British had won the war, Britain and France signed the Treaty of Paris. Marked the end of French power in North America. Britain gained most of French land, including all 13 Colonies. Albany Plan of Union- the plan to attempt to create “one general government” for the British colonies, proposed by Benjamin Franklin. The plan was accepted, but not approved by the colonial assemblies. This was because colonial governing bodies thought a unified governing body would not protect everyone’s interests. Ally- a nation that works with another nation for a common purpose French and Indian War- France + Indians vs. Britain land war in North America. Both wanted control of the Ohio River. Part of larger 7 Years War. Britain won. Fort Duquesne- General Braddock had little experience at fighting in the forests. He decided to attack Fort Duquesne. Moved slowly and noisily through the forest, and the French/Indians launched a surprise attack. Almost ½ of British soldiers were killed or wounded. Why did natives choose to participate in the war- the Natives chose to participate in the war because they believed it was the only way to protect their lands from further settlement. 7 years war- the 7 Years War was really the “first World War.” It took place in North America, Europe, and Asia. The French and Indian War was part of the 7 Years War. What happened to Quebec and New France- Quebec and New France both fell after the British attacked Quebec by climbing a steep hill that was only guarded by a few soldiers. Battle broke out, and Quebec eventually surrendered to Britain. What did the French and Indian war set up for the future in the 13 colonies- after the French and Indian War, the 13 colonies were all owned by Britain. The war cost Britain a lot of money, and they decided to tax the colonists. Even though every colony had their differences, they all hated the British. This sparked the Revolutionary War.
