# Reflection on Language ## Graphic Accentuation and the Diaeresis **Graphic Accentuation** * The graphic accent is a sign, sometimes used, to indicate the stressed syllable in a word. **Classification of words by syllables** Words are classified based on the number of syllables: * **Monosyllabic:** One syllable * **Polysyllabic:** More than one syllable Polysyllabic words are further classified based on the stressed syllable: | | Syllable placement | Examples | |-----------------------|------------------------|--------------------------| | **Acute** | Last syllable | _ra-mon_, _can-çó_, _por-ter_ | | **Plan** | Penultimate syllable | _cot-xe_, _ca-di-ra_, _ú-til_ | | **Esdrujules** | Antepenultimate syllable| _mà-qui-na_, _rà-di-o_, _his-to-ri-a_| **Compound words:** In compound words, the main stress usually falls on the second word. **Graphic Accent Types** There are two types of graphic accent: * **Open/Grave (à, è, ò):** used when the vowel is pronounced open. * **Closed/Acute (í, ú, é, ó):** used when the vowel is pronounced closed. **Rules of Accentuation** * **Acute words:** Words ending in a vowel, "s," or "n-en/in." * **Plan words:** Words not ending in a vowel, "s", "n-en/in". * **Esdrujules words:** All words. **Diaeresis** The diaeresis is a diacritical mark (¨) * Used with "u" in certain groups ( güe, qüe, etc.) as well as with "i" to avoid a diphthong * Used in loan words from other languages. **Examples** Examples are given for different types of accents. **Note:** The document also includes examples of words following specific rules of accentuation.
