Graphic Accentuation

  • Graphic accent is a symbol used to indicate a stressed syllable in a word.
  • Words are classified:
    • Monosyllabic: One syllable
    • Polysyllabic: Multiple syllables (further classified based on stressed syllable)
    • Acute: Last syllable
    • Plan: Penultimate syllable
    • Esdrujules: Antepenultimate syllable
  • Compound words:
    • The second word usually receives the most stress.

Types of Graphic Accent
