# Goals of the Constitution **In order to create a more perfect union** * **Purpose:** To create a system that supported both federal and state rights. * **Details:** The framers of the Constitution had to find a balance between state and federal laws to allow each state to care for its citizens while forming common goals for all citizens. **Establish Justice** * **Purpose:** To create fairness under the law for all citizens. * **Details:** The framers knew the nation needed a uniform system to settle legal disputes, meaning the legal system would require all laws to be applied fairly and evenly to all citizens, regardless of race, religion, gender, or country of origin. **Insure domestic tranquility** * **Purpose:** To protect peace within our country. * **Details:** Under the Constitution, the government has the power to ensure peace and order. This includes providing relief to citizens from natural disaster or pandemic, or enforcing laws passed by the state or federal legislatures. **Provide for the common defense** * **Purpose:** To develop a system to protect our citizens from attacks. * **Details:** Every country has a duty to protect its citizens from foreign attacks. The framers of the Constitution gave the national government the ability to raise a standing army and navy. However, this power was balanced by placing control of these branches under civilians. **Promote the general welfare** * **Purpose:** To make sure all our citizens have what they need to live. * **Details:** The Constitution set out to give the national government the means to promote the general welfare and well-being of all citizens. An example of this is organizations like the CDC, which leads the fight against diseases. **Secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity** * **Purpose:** To protect the greatness of freedom for us now and for all of our future generations. * **Details:** During the Revolutionary War, colonists fought and died for liberty. The Constitution made liberty a central part, and amendments have been added to extend this sense of liberty to more Americans.
