# Science Notes ## Structures * **Nucleus:** Control center that contains genetic information. * **Cytoplasm:** Jelly-like substance where organelles float. * **Cell Membrane:** Protects the cell and controls the movement in and out. * **Mitochondria:** Powerhouse of cells. * **Ribosome:** Where proteins are made. * **Endoplasmic Reticulum:** Transport materials within the cells. * **Golgi Bodies:** Packages and distributes materials. * **Lysosome:** Digest unwanted materials. ## Two Types of cells * **Prokaryotic:** (Bacteria, without nucleus, and it's a small simple cell.) * **Eukaryotic:** (Plant and animal cell, large, more complex, and with nucleus.) ## Main cell theory * All living things are composed of one or more cells. * The cells are a basic unit of life, basic unit of structure and function on living organisms. * All cells come from pre-existing cells. ## Important questions * **What is the smallest unit of life?** -Cells. * **Who discovered cells by observing a piece of cork under a microscope?** -Robert Hooke. * **Which organelle is known as the "powerhouse of the cell"?** -Mitochondria. * **What type of cell has no nucleus?** - Prokaryotic. * **What structure protects the plant wall and gives it shape?** - Cell Wall. * **Animals have a cell wall?** - False * **The nucleus contains the cell's DNA?** -True * **Lysosomes help break down unwanted materials in the cell?** -True * **Name two differences between plants and animal cells?** - Plants have cell walls and animals don't. * **What are the three main ideas of cell theory?** - All living things are composed of one or more cells, the cells are a basic unit of life, basic unit of structure and function on living organisms, and all cells come from pre-existing cells.
