Flashcards

Prokaryotic cell

A type of cell that doesn't have a nucleus, small and simple, such as bacteria.

Eukaryotic cell

A type of cell with a nucleus, larger and more complex, like plant and animal cells.

Cell theory

Three main ideas about cells: all living things are made of one or more cells, cells are the basic unit of life (structure and function of living organisms) , and all cells come from pre-existing cells.

Mitochondria

The "powerhouse" of the cell, responsible for energy production.

Study Notes

Cell Structures

  • Nucleus: Control center, contains genetic information
  • Cytoplasm: Jelly-like substance, organelles float within
  • Cell Membrane: Protects cell, controls movement in and out
  • Mitochondria: Powerhouse of the cell
  • Ribosomes: Protein production site
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum: Transports materials within cells
  • Golgi Bodies: Packages and distributes materials
  • Lysosomes: Digest unwanted materials

Cell Types

  • Prokaryotic: Bacteria, lack a nucleus, simple cells
  • Eukaryotic: Plants and animals, have a nucleus, complex cells

Cell Theory

  • All living things are composed of one or more cells
  • Cells are the basic unit of life and structure
  • All cells come from pre-existing cells

Important Cell Facts

  • The smallest unit of life is a cell
  • Robert Hooke observed cells in cork using a microscope
  • Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
  • Prokaryotic cells lack a nucleus
  • Cell walls provide shape and structure in plant cells (animals do not have cell walls)
  • The nucleus contains the cell's DNA
  • Lysosomes break down unwanted materials within the cell
