# Map of a Symphony Orchestra An orchestra is a large group of musicians playing together on various instruments. There could be 70 to 100 instrumentalists, depending on the music to be played. The orchestra developed gradually from the court bands of the 17th century. Instruments improved and new ones were added, and by about 1830, a typical symphony orchestra was complete. A grand piano can be used as an orchestral or solo instrument (for piano concertos when it is usually positioned at the front of the stage). ## Instruments **Percussion Section** * Gong * Bass drum * Tubular bells * Snare drum * Cymbals * Triangle * French horns * Tambourine * Xylophone * Timpani (see page 91) **Brass Section** * Trumpet * Horns * Trombones * Tuba **Woodwind Section** * Bass clarinet * Piccolo * Clarinets * Flutes * Bassoons * Oboes * Contra bassoon * English horn **String Section** * Harp * Violin * First violins * Second violins * Violas * Cello * Double bass ## Seating Arrangements The players are seated in a semicircle facing the conductor. The louder instruments are positioned behind the quieter ones to produce a good balance of sound. **Image Description:** The image shows a detailed diagram of a symphony orchestra, categorizing instruments into Percussion, Brass, Woodwind, and Strings sections. Illustrations of each instrument are shown, along with a note about their function within the orchestra and their seating arrangements. There is also a silhouette of a conductor, indicating the position of the conductor in an orchestra.
