MEDIUMS OF PAINTINGS WHAT IS MEDIUM? PAINTING MEDIA A medium refers to what material a work of art is made of. Each of these art mediums can produce a distinctive style. While there are plenty of choices, several mediums have been popular among painters to express their creativity. 1. OIL PAINTING - One of the oldest painting mediums, known for its rich colors and slow drying time. - Made from pigments mixed with oils like linseed or walnut. -Oil paint became the principal medium used for creating artworks as its advantages became widely known. 2. PASTELS - Made from powdered pigments mixed with a binder, available in oil and soft varieties. 3. ACRYLIC -Fast drying paint containing pigment suspension in acrylic resistant polymer emulsion. Acrylic paints can be diluted with water but become water- resistant when dry. 4. WATER COLOR -This is a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water- soluble vehicle. 5. INK -Ink paintings one with a liquid that contains other dyes used to color a surface to produce an image, text, or deign. 6. ENCAUSTIC - Made from beeswax mixed with pigments, encaustic paint can be melted and applied to surfaces. 7. FRESCO -Fresco is any of serveral related mural paintings type, done on plaster on walls or ceilings. FRESCO 8. GOUACHE -Gouache is a water-based paint containing of pigment and other materials designed to be used in an opaque painting method. 9. ENAMEL Enamel are made by painting a substrate, typically metal, with powdered glass, minerals called color oxides that provides coloration, after firing at a temperature of 750-850 degrees Celsius, the result is a fused lamination of glass and metal. 10. SPRAY PAINT - Spray paint is a type of paint that comes in a several pressurized container and is released in a fine spray mist when depressing a valve button. 11. TEMPERA -Tempera, also known an egg tempera, is a permanent, fast- drying painting medium consisting of colored pigment mixed tinous material such as an egg with a water soluble binder medium. 12. WATER MISCIBLE OIL PAINT -also called "water soluble" or water mixable is a modern variety of oil paint engineered to be thinned and cleared up with water, rather than having to use chemicals such as turpentine.
