MEDIUMS OF PAINTINGS WHAT IS MEDIUM?  PAINTING MEDIA A medium refers to what material a work of art is made of. Each of these art mediums can produce a distinctive style. While there are plenty of choices, several mediums have been popular among painters to express their creativity.  1. OIL PAINTING - One of the oldest painting mediums, known for its rich colors and slow drying time. - Made from pigments mixed with oils like linseed or walnut. -Oil paint became the principal medium used for creating artworks as its advantages became widely known.  2. PASTELS - Made from powdered pigments mixed with a binder, available in oil and soft varieties. 3. ACRYLIC -Fast drying paint containing pigment suspension in acrylic resistant polymer emulsion. Acrylic paints can be diluted with water but become water- resistant when dry.  4. WATER COLOR -This is a painting method in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water- soluble vehicle. 5. INK -Ink paintings one with a liquid that contains other dyes used to color a surface to produce an image, text, or deign. 6. ENCAUSTIC - Made from beeswax mixed with pigments, encaustic paint can be melted and applied to surfaces.  7.
