It is a voluntary action and conscious effort of married couples to make informed decisions on: a) when to have and not to have children. b) how many children to have, and c) when to stop at the least risk to the health of the mother and the best chance of survival of the child SLIDESMANIA.COM What is the importance of family planning? This is the most widely approved contraception. A woman produces one ripe egg every menstrual cycle (28 days on the average) and that can live and be fertilized within 24-48 hours. B. Calendar method. This identifies a woman's fertile and infertile days based on the length of her menstrual cycles. In counting the fertile days of the woman, an allowance of 2 days of abstinence is provided for the sperm survival of 2-3 days and 2 days abstinence for the egg survival of 1-2 days. C. Basal body temperature (BBT) method. The BBT is the lowest body temperature of a person, when at rest. A woman's body temperature before ovulation is low. D. Withdrawal. It is the least effective in preventing conception since it requires tremendous self-control on the part of the male, and it causes frustration on the part of the female. Types of Family Planning Methods II. Artificial Methods "Mechanical Devices A. Intrauterine device (IUD) and CUT380A. This is a tiny mechanical device inserted into the uterus which prevents the meeting of the sperm and egg cells. B. Male condom A barrier method for men that protects women against pregnancy and against sexually transmitted diseases, especially AIDS. It is 75-98% effective if used properly. C. Female condom This is the female counterpart of male condom, inserted into the vagina before sexual contact. It addresses the problem of men who refuse to take responsibility for wearing condoms. Types of Family Planning Methods II. Artificial Methods "Mechanical Devices E. Injectable (Noristerat, DMPA). This is a contraceptive administered every two or three months. It thickens the woman's cervical mucus, stops ovulation, and causes the fallopian tube to prevent fertilization. F. Bilateral tubal ligation (BLT). It is the surgical tying or cutting of the fallopian tubes of the woman to prevent the entry of the egg from the ovary. It is usually performed after childbirth. G. Vasectomy It is the surgical tying or cutting of the vas deferens of the male to prevent the passage of sperm to the urethra H. Cervical cap. SLIDESMANIA.COM This is a dome-shaped plastic or rubber cap made to fit the cervix.
