Northwest Ordinance (1787) * The Northwest Ordinance established procedures for admitting new states. * It gave new states equal rights as the original states. ## 2. Louisiana Purchase (1803) * France offered to sell land west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. * The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the US and gave control of the Mississippi River port of New Orleans. ## 3. Florida Purchase (1819) * Spain was losing control of its colonies in South America and was looking to sell Florida. * The US purchased Florida from Spain for $5 million in the Adams-Onís Treaty. ## 4.
