# Discovery of Penicillin In 1928, a Scottish scientist named Alexander Fleming was researching a type of bacteria called staphylococcus. He conducted experiments with the bacteria in dishes. Fleming was a brilliant scientist, but he was also messy and absent-minded. When he left his lab for vacation, he failed to clean up, leaving the bacteria in the dishes. Upon his return, he noticed mold had grown in the dishes. Instead of discarding the dishes, he examined them under a microscope. He observed that the area around the mold was free of bacteria. He realized that the mold had somehow dissolved the harmful bacteria. This seemingly insignificant mishap led to the discovery of penicillin, the first antibiotic. Today, this life-saving drug is used worldwide. Each year, over 80 million prescriptions for penicillin are written in the US alone.
