# The Complement System - Works together with 1st line of defense 1. Bacterial aggregation mating, making it easy for phagocytosis 2. Dilates and increases vascular permeability (leaky vessels) = redness & swelling (inflammation) - ICF to ECF = hypovolemia & hypotension 1. Vasoconstriction -> increase blood flow to major organs 2. HR & increased cardiac contractility to maintain CO 3. Vasodilation in kidneys -> urine output BUT ongoing hypoperfusion, decrease urine output = anuria or oliguria 4. Increased cardiac preload = excess fluid in ventricles that cannot be ejected 5. Increased respiration rate - If it fails to compensate: 1. Hypoxia & hypercapnia -> CNS decompensation (seizures, stupor, coma) 2. Multisystem failure = septic shock & multiorgan failure - Compensation - Decrease $O_2$ -> hyperventilation -> decrease $CO_2$ (PP to increase $O_2$) - If body cannot compensate then - Decrease $O_2$ -> increase $CO_2$ = hypoxic hypercapnia
