## Reflection ### Laws of Reflection 1. The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane. 2. The angle of incidence θi is equal to the angle of reflection θ. * So = Same distance * Do = Upright * U = Laterally inverted * Like = Virtual * Sweet = Same size * Swanson ### Comparison of (a) regular and (b) irregular reflection * For **regular reflection**, the parallel incident rays are reflected in the same direction because the surface is smooth. All the rays have the same angles of incidence and reflection. -> **A clear image is formed.** * For **irregular (diffuse) reflection**, the parallel incident rays are reflected in different directions because the surface is rough. The angles of incidence and reflection differ from one ray to another. -> **No clear image is formed.** ### Reflection in the Plane Mirror The five characteristics of plane mirror images: 1. The image and object are equally far from the mirror 2. The image and the object have the same size 3. The image is virtual -> image cannot be captured on a surface. \*What is real image: can be captured on the surface 4. The image is laterally inverted 5. The image is upright ### Drawing ray diagram 1. Locate image, I 2. Draw reflected rays 3. Draw incident rays **Figure 12.14 Object O in front of a plane mirror** * In the image diagram, the mirrored surface is on the right, with incident rays coming from the left with labels: O, H, V, and I.
