Destroy ecosystems:** * Flood large areas of coastline wetlands and forests, damaging habitats. * Pollute and damage and kill wildlife by large amounts of debris carried by waves. **2. Destroy infrastructures:** * Infrastructures swept away and destroyed by fast-moving waters and a large amount of debris swept along. **3. Disrupts services:** * Electricity and communication cables snapped by fast-moving waters and a large amount of debris carried along. * Roads and railways swept away by fast-moving waters, making it difficult to rescue people and/or supply emergency aid. **4. Injuries and Death:** * Sweeping water can drown people. * A large amount of debris carried along can hit and kill people. **Example:** * 2011 Tohoku, Japan earthquake (Mw 7.0) * Triggered a tsunami up to 40m high. * Waves destroyed homes and infrastructures. * Waves carried debris inland, polluting and flooding large areas of land. * Coastal city of Sendai experienced extensive damage and half its population was killed.
