# 01 What is Literature? Literature features human experiences that are seen as fleeting moments caught by the creative eye. (Sygaco, 2017). From the Latin word *literatura*, from the root word *littera* (letter or writing spoken or written). It nourishes people's emotional lives It mirrors a portion of humanity It illustrates the richness of human life ## Two Divisions of Literature - Fiction - Imagination (Alternate Worlds) - Non-Fiction - Truth (The Real World) # 02 Literary Genres ## What are Genres? From the French word for "type", a genre may refer to the major forms of literature, mainly poetry, fiction, drama, and essays (Meyer, 2006). Determined by technique, tone, content, and (in the case of fiction) length. Genres can also refer to the narrative content of what we read, write, or watch: Romance, Comedy, Historical (Period), Action, Thriller, Suspense, etc. Genres may also include *subgenres* and a mixture of different other genres or subgenres. Genres are *NOT* classified by the age group they cater to (e.g. YA novels, children's books). They also do *NOT* refer to literary formats (e.g. graphic novels, picture books) # 03 Fiction vs Nonfiction ## Fiction A product of the imagination but with truthfulness of what has been happening around. It is divided into Prose and Poetry. ### Prose - Short Story - Novel - Film - Drama ## Creative Non-Fiction Combines the literary principles of fiction and non-fiction. It is the process of crafting stories based on truthful events and characters. ### Characteristics of Creative Nonfiction - Factual and Evidence-Based - Detailed - Chronological or non-chronological - In the form of prose ### Types of Creative Nonfiction - Autobiography or Biography (A person's life history) - Memoir (Collection of memories written by the person) - Literary Journalism or Reportage (Factual reporting done artistically) - Blogs as well as personal essays, travelogues, flash essays, and testimonio ## Literary Genres - Fiction - Short Stories - Novels - Myths - Folklore - Drama - Tragedy - Farce - Opera - Pantomime - Comedy - Poetry - Songs - Ballads - Poems - Sonnets - Nonfiction - Biographies/Autobiographies - Essays - Reports/Travelogues - Critiques
