CREATIVE NON- FICTION PREPARED BY: MS. LOREN JOY S. MAGNO, LPT If you will be a literary artist, what will you be? Why? PICTURE WORD SCRAMBLE M E O P Y A P L L E S V O N S U R A L M N J O I What literary genre do you think novels, poem, play, and journalism belong to? LITERATURE came from the Latin word “litera” which means letter. It deals with thoughts, ideas and emotions of man- thus, it can be said that literature is the story of man. It enriched ideas about the world and strengthen our knowledge about the different subjects connecting us in a world where there are no boundaries. LITERATURE Literature is divided into different categories and these are called genres. LITERARY GENRES are the category of literature based on its form, content, technique, and style and sometimes even in length. The most traditional genres in literature are epic, tragedy, comedy, and creative non- fiction. LITERARY GENRES The traditional genres are easily distinguished because of its forms. For example, poetry can be easily identified because of the use of verses rather than the narrative found in other categories of TRADITION AL GENRES OF LITERATURE FICTION is the category of literature and other creative work whose content is imagined, fabricated, or invented by the author that may not be necessarily based on facts. FICTION It is the most common genre of literature because of its great storytelling technique by using narration as its fundamental form. The conventions of fiction differ from each subgenre. Among these conventions are the setting, characters, conflict, plot, and theme. POETRY is one of the oldest forms of literature. It is the most beautiful genre because of its use of aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language evoke emotions and meanings through symbolic representation of ideas. POETRY It uses forms and conventions to suggest varied interpretations and emotional responses. Using the conventions of poetry, readers may now have a standard meaning of a symbolic poem. DRAMA more popular as play, is a literary genre that involves actors acting as characters in a story involving conflicts especially intended to be performed on a stage. Drama may be prose or verse that is interpreted in a dramatic art or presentation. DRAMA Drama can be a play, a puppet show, a dance presentation or an opera. Today, many forms of drama have been created so as to maxim the freedom of expression in this genre that many called "the highest form of performing arts." CREATIVE NON-FICTION Creative and non-fiction are two things that are not supposed to be together. They are two ideas opposing each other and the mere fact that the definition of the two negate each other means that they should not be put together in one idea. CREATIVE according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, is having or showing an ability to make new things or create new ideas. While non-fiction is writing about facts or real events. NON-FICTION is always defined as something which is not fiction and not poetry, or even technical writing and journalism. Simply put, creative non-fiction uses literary styles and techniques to skillfully create factual and accurate narratives. It deviates from other non-fiction like academic or technical writing and journalism, which are actually also anchored in accuracy of facts but not written in service of its craft. The main goal of creative non-fiction is to communicate information, just like a journalist, but shape it in a way that reads like fiction. Writers also see this genre as literary non-fiction or narrative non- fiction. Therefore, it's like telling a story based on factual evidences. FICTION The word 'fiction' comes from the Latin word 'fictus', which means 'to form' - fiction is stories that are 'formed' and created by a writer. It is a literary genre that describes events, situations, ideas, and characters derived from the writer's imagination. Something that is invented and created narrative works from a point of view without basing it to facts that can be found in the real WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF FICTION WRITING? Fiction can take many forms, such as: Novels: Novels are books that have one long story written in them. They're works of prose fiction. They're longer than short stories and novellas. Novellas: A novella is a standalone piece of fiction that's shorter than a full-length novel but longer than a short story or novelette. Short stories: Short stories are much shorter than a novel and usually deals with only a few characters. Flash fiction: Flash fiction is a type of fiction writing that's defined by how short it is. Flash fiction is usually kept beneath a strict word count to tell a story in the least words possible. Some flash fiction tells a story in just a few words. Play scripts: A play or drama script is the story that has been written for actors to perform, with the term 'play' relating to a theatrical performance. Poems: Poems use specifically chosen language, rhythm, rhyme, imagery and more to create an image or tell a narrative. Poems can be short or as long as a full novel. NON- FICTION are works about facts and based from real events. Nonfiction is literature that, regardless of the subject matter, has a simple goal: to provide information. It should be based on facts and conclusions of the author's research or expertise, as opposed to the creativity of the author's imagination. COMMON TYPES OF NON-FICTION Histories are as popular now as they were in ancient times. Today, they serve the same purpose – to shine a light on the past and cement its importance. Biography, Autobiography, and Memoir tells the important stories of a person’s life, whether they’re a well-known public figure or someone who has an interesting story that inspires us all. Science and Nature writing seeks to make complicated matters easier to understand, and rejoices in the lessons learned from the natural world. COMMON TYPES OF NON-FICTION Leadership and Self-Help books are part of a long tradition of nonfiction that provides instructions for how to rise up and become your best self — whether in your personal or professional life. Current Affairs and Politics often pick up where histories leave off, taking a deep dive into the impactful events of today. True Crime books examine the impact of real-life crimes, often tracking a criminal case from the beginning of an investigation to the apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrator(s). Based from the definition above, we can definitely say that creative non-fiction follows the same characteristics of non- fiction, but the techniques in writing are influenced by fiction. A creative non-fiction writer may have the creative skills of a fiction writer and research skills of a non-fiction writer to be good at his craft. HOW AM I DIFFERENT?
