Computer: A computer is an electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data. It operates based on instructions from a program, allowing it to perform tasks such as calculations, data processing, and controlling other devices. A computer typically consists of input devices, a processor, memory, and output devices, working together to execute tasks efficiently. Generation of computers Computers have evolved significantly over the years, and the history of computers is often divided into generations based on the technology used. There are Five Generations of computers: 1) First-generation computers (1940-1956): First-generation computers, which were created between the 1940s and 1956s, represented the start of the computers. These computers employed vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for storage. First Generation Computers were too bulky and large that they needed a full room and consumed a lot of electricity. programming on them was a tedious task as they used low-level programming language and used no Operating System. First-generation computers were used for calculation, storage, and control purposes. Punch cards were used to improve the information for external storage. What is a Vacuum Tube? An electron tube could be a vacuum tube or valve is a device that controls the flow of electrical current during a high vacuum between electrodes so that an electrical potential has been applied. Vacuum Tubes were employed in the first generation of computers to perform calculations. Examples of First Generation Computer 1. ENIAC: Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, built by J. Presper Eckert and John V. Mauchly was a general-purpose computer. It had been cumbersome, and large, and contained 18,000 vacuum tubes. 2. EDVAC: Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer was designed by von Neumann. It could store data also as instruction and thus the speed was enhanced. 3. UNIVAC: It was the world’s 1st commercially electronic computing device. it absolutely was created by Eckert and Mauchly in 1947. It absolutely was delivered to the North American country Bureau of a census in 1951. Advantages: Pioneered electronic computing and faster calculations compared to mechanical machines. Could perform complex calculations. Disadvantages: Large in size, occupying entire rooms. Consumed a lot of electricity and generated excessive heat. Prone to frequent failures due to the delicate nature of vacuum tubes. 2)Second Generation Computers (1956-1963): The second generation computers were used during 1957-1963.They are also known as transistor computers. The second generation of computers consists of two types of devices, transistors, and magnetic core. The transistors helped to develop a better computer than the first generation computers consisting of vacuum tubes. Examples of First Generation Computer Some second generation of computers are IBM 1920, IBM 7094, CDC 1604, CDC 3600, IBM 1401, etc. Advantages: They are smaller in size as compare to the first generation. It is more reliable Uses less power and generates less heat. The speed of the second generation is faster as compared to the first generation. Second generation computers have improved accuracy and offer better portability. Disadvantages: As we know, that they generate less heat but still require a cooling system. They require frequent maintenance. The commercial production of second generation computers is difficult. They are used only for some specific purpose. They use punch cards for input. 3)Third generation computers (1964-1971): Third generation computers are advance from first and second generation computers. The third generation computer was started in 1965 and ended around 1971. Third generation computers start using integrated circuits instead of transistors. The integrated circuit (IC) is a semiconductor material, that contains thousands of transistors miniaturized in it. With the help of IC, the computer becomes more reliable, fast, required less maintenance, small in size, generates less heat, and is less expensive. The third generation computers reduce the computational time. In the previous generation, the computational time was microsecond which was decreased to the nanosecond. In this generation, punch cards were replaced by mouse and keyboard. Also, multiprogramming operating systems, time- sharing, and remote processing were introduced in this generation. Advantages: Computer required less space due to the use of integrated circuits (IC). A single integrated circuit (IC) contains transistors, resistors, condensers, condensers, etc. on a piece of the silicon semiconductor substrate. It produces less heat and required less energy during operations. Due to this third generation computers have less hardware failure as compare to previous generations. In third generation computers, the punch cards were removed and the input was taken with the help of a mouse and keyboards. They have high storage capacity and give more accurate results, which helps to store and compute and calculate more precise operations. The computers were portable and offer better speed. Disadvantages: These computers still required air conditioning. To manufacture IC, highly sophisticated technology was required. Maintaining IC chips were difficult. Fourth Generation Computers (1971-Present): Fourth generation computers were a major leap from the third generation, starting around 1971 and continuing to the present day. The key innovation of this generation was the use of microprocessors, where the entire Central Processing Unit (CPU) was placed on a single chip. This allowed computers to become much smaller, faster, and more affordable. With the development of microprocessors, fourth generation computers became more powerful and compact. Personal computers (PCs) and laptops became common during this era, allowing individual users access to computing technology. This generation also saw the rise of graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which made computers easier to use by replacing command-line interfaces with icons and visual navigation. Fourth generation computers also introduced networking capabilities, which connected computers together, leading to the development of the internet. Advantages: Microprocessors made computers smaller and more powerful than ever. Mass production of microprocessors reduced costs, making computers affordable for personal and business use. : These computers consumed less power than previous generations. Networking technologies led to the rise of the internet and online communication. Introduction of laptops and mobile devices. Disadvantages: The increased use of computers and networking led to issues like hacking and viruses. These computers required a reliable power supply. Fifth Generation Computers (Present and Beyond): Fifth generation computers represent the most advanced stage of computing, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and quantum computing. Unlike previous generations, which focused primarily on increasing speed and reducing size, the goal of fifth generation computers is to enable machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Fifth generation computers utilize AI technologies such as voice recognition, natural language processing, and robotics. They are also exploring the use of quantum computing, which has the potential to process complex data at incredible speeds. In addition, fifth generation computers have made cloud computing more common, allowing users to access powerful computing resources remotely over the internet. Advantages: AI allows computers to think, learn, and make decisions, enabling automation of complex tasks. Quantum computing and advanced processors enable handling of massive amounts of data. Technologies like voice assistants and smart devices improve the way people interact with computers. Access to storage and processing power over the internet reduces the need for powerful personal hardware. Disadvantages: The development and implementation of AI and quantum computing are expensive. Issues such as privacy, data security, and the role of AI in society are major concerns. Developing and maintaining AI systems and quantum computers requires advanced technical expertise. Classification of Computers Computers can be classified based on several criteria, including size, purpose, technology, processing capability, and functionality. 1. Based on Size: Microcomputers: Often referred to as personal computers (PCs), microcomputers are designed for individual use. They typically include a microprocessor, RAM, storage, and peripherals. Features: Compact size, ease of use, and versatility in running various software applications. Examples: Desktop PCs, laptops, netbooks, and tablets. They are widely used in homes and offices for tasks such as word processing, browsing the internet, and gaming. Minicomputers: These computers are larger than microcomputers but smaller than mainframes. Minicomputers can handle multiple tasks simultaneously and serve several users. Features: Typically used in medium-sized businesses for applications like manufacturing control, inventory management, and data processing. Examples: PDP-11 and VAX series. Minicomputers were popular in the 1960s and 1970s, often acting as a bridge between smaller microcomputers and larger mainframes. Mainframe Computers: Mainframes are powerful computers designed for bulk data processing and large-scale transaction processing. They can support thousands of users simultaneously. Features: Known for their reliability, scalability, and high availability. Mainframes handle vast amounts of data and are used in industries such as banking, insurance, and government. These computers typically have specialized hardware and software tailored to their functions. 3. Based on Technology: Analog Computers: These computers use continuous physical quantities to represent information. They process data in a manner proportional to the physical quantities involved. Features: Effective for tasks requiring simulation of real-world systems, like flight simulators or industrial control systems. Examples: Slide rules, analog voltmeters, and differential analyzers. Analog computers are less common today but are still used in specialized applications. Input Devices Input devices are hardware components that allow users to enter data and instructions into a computer. They act as a bridge between the user and the computer, enabling interaction with the system. Input devices convert user actions into signals that the computer can understand and process. 1. Keyboard The keyboard is one of the most common input devices. It allows users to input data into the computer by pressing keys. The keys include letters, numbers, symbols, and function keys, making it possible to type text, execute commands, and control the computer. Each key is mapped to a specific character or command. When a key is pressed, the keyboard sends a signal to the computer, which interprets it as input. Types of Keyboards: QWERTY keyboard: The standard layout used in most computers. Multimedia keyboards: Include additional keys for controlling media (e.g., play, pause). Gaming keyboards: Designed with extra features for gamers, such as programmable keys. 2. Mouse The mouse is a pointing device that allows users to control the movement of the cursor on the screen. It detects motion on a surface and translates it into cursor movement. Microphone A microphone is an input device that captures sound and converts it into a digital signal. It is used for audio recording, voice commands, and communication in video conferencing or gaming. The microphone picks up sound waves and converts them into an electrical signal, which the computer processes as audio data. Microphones are used in applications like speech recognition, voice chatting, and creating multimedia content. 6. Joystick A joystick is a device that is commonly used in gaming to control movement. It consists of a stick that pivots on a base and allows users to control the direction of an object on the screen, such as an airplane or a character in a video game. By moving the joystick, users can interact with games and simulations that require precise control. 7. Light Pen A light pen is a pointing device used to draw or select objects directly on a screen. It is typically used with specialized applications, like computer-aided design (CAD) or graphic design. The light pen detects the position of the cursor on the screen and sends the coordinates to the computer. 8. Graphic Tablet (Digitizer) A graphic tablet, also known as a digitizer, is an input device used by artists and designers to draw directly on the computer screen. Processor The processor, also known as the Central Processing Unit (CPU), is the brain of a computer. It is responsible for executing instructions and performing calculations necessary to run programs and perform tasks. The CPU interprets commands from the computer's hardware and software, and processes data to deliver output. Key Components of the CPU 1. Control Unit (CU): The Control Unit directs the operation of the processor. It manages the execution of instructions by telling the computer's memory, arithmetic/logic unit, and input/output devices how to respond to a program’s instructions. It fetches instructions from memory, decodes them, and then executes them by coordinating the activities of other CPU components. 2. Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU): The ALU performs all arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and logical (comparison, AND, OR, NOT) operations. It is the part of the CPU where all the mathematical and logical functions are processed. If you need to perform a calculation or make a decision (like comparing numbers), the ALU handles these tasks. 3. Registers: Registers are small, high-speed storage locations within the CPU. They temporarily hold data and instructions that the CPU is currently working on. Registers are much faster than standard memory (RAM) and are used for immediate data processing. Types of Registers: ▪ Data Register: Holds the data to be processed. ▪Instruction Register: Holds the instruction that is currently being executed. ▪Program Counter (PC): Holds the address of the next instruction to be executed. 4. Cache Memory: Cache memory is a small amount of high-speed memory located inside or very close to the CPU. It stores frequently accessed data and instructions to reduce the time the CPU takes to access data from the main memory (RAM). Levels of Cache: ▪ L1 Cache: The smallest and fastest cache, located directly within the CPU core. ▪ L2 Cache: Larger but slightly slower than L1 cache, it is usually shared between cores. ▪ L3 Cache: Larger and slower than L2, it is used to store even more data and is also shared between multiple CPU cores. Working of CPU: The processor performs tasks in a repetitive cycle known as the Fetch-Decode-Execute Cycle: 1. Fetch: The CPU fetches the next instruction from the computer’s memory (RAM) using the program counter (which keeps track of the next instruction). 2. Decode: The fetched instruction is decoded by the Control Unit. The CPU interprets what action it must perform based on the decoded instruction. 3. Execute: The CPU carries out the instruction. This could involve performing a calculation in the ALU, moving data to or from memory, or interacting with input/output devices. 4. Store: Once the instruction is executed, the result may be stored in a register or memory for future use. Output Devices: Output devices are hardware components that allow the computer to communicate the results of its processing to the user. These devices convert digital data from the computer into a human-readable form, such as text, audio and video. 1.Monitor The monitor, also known as a display screen, is the most common output device. It displays visual output from the computer, including text, images, videos, and graphical information. Displays the graphical user interface (GUI), allowing users to interact with the computer. Types: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display): A flat-panel display that uses liquid crystals to create images. Commonly found in laptops and desktops. LED (Light Emitting Diode): A display technology that uses light-emitting diodes for backlighting, providing better brightness and contrast than LCD. OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode): Offers even sharper colors and deeper blacks, commonly used in high-end devices. 2. Printer A printer is an output device that produces a physical, permanent copy of digital documents, images, or other data on paper. Converts digital files into hard copies. Types: Inkjet Printer: Sprays tiny droplets of ink onto paper. Suitable for both text and high-quality color images. Laser Printer: Uses a laser beam to produce high-speed, high-quality text and graphics. Dot Matrix Printer: Uses a print head that moves back and forth, striking an ink-soaked ribbon to create characters. It’s mostly used in environments where multi-part forms are required. 3D Printer: Creates three-dimensional objects by layering materials based on digital designs. 3. Speakers Speakers are output devices that produce sound. They convert digital audio signals from the computer into audible sound waves. Speakers allow users to listen to music, audio files, system sounds, or voice communication (such as in video conferencing). Types: Stereo Speakers: Produce sound in two channels, providing basic sound output. Surround Sound Speakers: Create an immersive audio experience by placing multiple speakers around the user. Built-in Laptop/Monitor Speakers: Integrated into laptops or monitors, providing basic sound output. 4. Headphones Headphones are personal audio output devices that allow users to listen to sound privately. They work similarly to speakers but are worn over or in the ears. Used for listening to audio without disturbing others, commonly used in personal or professional settings for music, gaming, or calls. Types: Wired Headphones: Connect to the computer via an audio jack. Wireless/Bluetooth Headphones: Connect wirelessly using Bluetooth technology. 5.Projector A projector is an output device that projects visual output from the computer onto a large screen or surface. It is commonly used in presentations, meetings, or classrooms. Displays text, images, or videos on a larger scale, making it suitable for group viewing. Types: LCD Projector: Uses liquid crystal display technology to project images. DLP (Digital Light Processing) Projector: Uses digital micro-mirrors to reflect light and project images. LED Projector: Uses LED technology for better energy efficiency and longer-lasting light. 6. Plotter A plotter is an output device used to produce high-quality graphics, diagrams, and large-scale engineering drawings. It is commonly used by architects, engineers, and designers. Unlike printers, plotters use pens to draw continuous lines, making them ideal for creating vector-based graphics and designs. Types: Drum Plotter: Uses a rotating drum to move paper, while pens draw on it. Flatbed Plotter: The paper remains stationary, and the pens move across the surface to draw the design. Memory Management in a Computer Memory management is an essential function of an operating system (OS) that handles and optimizes the use of the computer's memory resources. It ensures that memory is allocated efficiently for the system and the applications running on it. The main objective is to ensure that the CPU can access data as quickly as possible while keeping the system running smoothly and preventing memory issues like fragmentation or memory leaks. Role of Memory management Following are the important roles of memory management in a computer system: Memory manager is used to keep track of the status of memory locations, whether it is free or allocated. It addresses primary memory by providing abstractions so that software perceives a large memory is allocated to it. Memory manager permits computers with a small amount of main memory to execute programs larger than the size or amount of available memory. It does this by moving information back and forth between primary memory and secondary memory by using the concept of swapping. The memory manager is responsible for protecting the memory allocated to each process from being corrupted by another process. If this is not ensured, then the system may exhibit unpredictable behavior. Memory managers should enable sharing of memory space between processes. Thus, two programs can reside at the same memory location although at different times. Memory Management Techniques: The memory management techniques can be classified into following main categories: Contiguous memory management schemes: In a Contiguous memory management scheme, each program occupies a single contiguous block of storage locations, i.e., a set of memory locations with consecutive addresses. 1)Single contiguous memory management schemes: The Single contiguous memory management scheme is the simplest memory management scheme used in the earliest generation of computer systems. In this scheme, the main memory is divided into two contiguous areas or partitions. The operating systems reside permanently in one partition, generally at the lower memory, and the user process is loaded into the other partition. Advantages of Single contiguous memory management schemes: Simple to implement. Easy to manage and design. In a Single contiguous memory management scheme, once a process is loaded, it is given full processor's time, and no other processor will interrupt it. Disadvantages of Single contiguous memory management schemes: Wastage of memory space due to unused memory as the process is unlikely to use all the available memory space. The CPU remains idle, waiting for the disk to load the binary image into the main memory. It can not be executed if the program is too large to fit the entire available main memory space. It does not support multiprogramming, i.e., it cannot handle multiple programs simultaneously. 2)Multiple Partitioning: The single Contiguous memory management scheme is inefficient as it limits computers to execute only one program at a time resulting in wastage in memory space and CPU time. The problem of inefficient CPU use can be overcome using multiprogramming that allows more than one program to run concurrently. To switch between two processes, the operating systems need to load both processes into the main memory. The operating system needs to divide the available main memory into multiple parts to load multiple processes into the main memory. Thus multiple processes can reside in the main memory simultaneously. The multiple partitioning schemes can be of two types: Fixed Partitioning Dynamic Partitioning Fixed Partitioning The main memory is divided into several fixed-sized partitions in a fixed partition memory management scheme or static partitioning. These partitions can be of the same size or different sizes. Each partition can hold a single process. The number of partitions determines the degree of multiprogramming, i.e., the maximum number of processes in memory. These partitions are made at the time of system generation and remain fixed after that. Advantages of Fixed Partitioning memory management schemes: Simple to implement. Easy to manage and design. Disadvantages of Fixed Partitioning memory management schemes: This scheme suffers from internal fragmentation. The number of partitions is specified at the time of system generation. Dynamic Partitioning The dynamic partitioning was designed to overcome the problems of a fixed partitioning scheme. In a dynamic partitioning scheme, each process occupies only as much memory as they require when loaded for processing. Requested processes are allocated memory until the entire physical memory is exhausted or the remaining space is insufficient to hold the requesting process. In this scheme the partitions used are of variable size, and the number of partitions is not defined at the system generation time. Advantages of Dynamic Partitioning memory management schemes: Simple to implement. Easy to manage and design. Disadvantages of Dynamic Partitioning memory management schemes: This scheme also suffers from internal fragmentation. The number of partitions is specified at the time of system segmentation. Non-Contiguous memory management schemes: In a Non-Contiguous memory management scheme, the program is divided into different blocks and loaded at different portions of the memory that need not necessarily be adjacent to one another. This scheme can be classified depending upon the size of blocks and whether the blocks reside in the main memory or not. 1)Paging Paging is a technique that eliminates the requirements of contiguous allocation of main memory. In this, the main memory is divided into fixed-size blocks of physical memory called frames. The size of a frame should be kept the same as that of a page to maximize the main memory and avoid external fragmentation. Advantages of paging: Pages reduce external fragmentation. Simple to implement. Memory efficient. Due to the equal size of frames, swapping becomes very easy. It is used for faster access of data. 2)Segmentation Segmentation is a technique that eliminates the requirements of contiguous allocation of main memory. In this, the main memory is divided into variable-size blocks of physical memory called segments. It is based on the way the programmer follows to structure their programs. With segmented memory allocation, each job is divided into several segments of different sizes, one for each module. Functions, subroutines, stack, array, etc., are examples of such modules. Functions of Memory Management 1. Memory Allocation: The OS allocates memory to various programs and applications based on their requirements. Efficient allocation ensures that enough memory is provided for each process, preventing crashes or slowdowns. 2. Memory Deallocation: After a program or process completes execution, the OS deallocates or frees the memory space, making it available for other programs. This ensures memory is not wasted or locked by completed processes. 3. Swapping: When the system runs out of physical memory (RAM), the OS uses a technique called swapping. It moves inactive or less-used processes from the main memory to a reserved area on the hard drive, known as virtual memory or page file, to free up RAM. 4. Virtual Memory: Virtual memory allows the system to extend the available RAM by using a portion of the hard disk. This memory management technique lets programs use more memory than physically available, but at a performance cost since accessing data on the hard drive is slower than accessing it in RAM. The OS divides programs into smaller blocks called pages, and only the required pages are loaded into RAM, with the rest stored on the hard drive. Types of Memory in a Computer 1.
