## Who Am I? The page is from a book containing information about self-identity. ### Connections * In your journal, list the things that you are good at and the hopes that you have for your future. All of these play an important part in making you the person that you are. ### Things To Do * Work with someone in your class, who you do not know very well. Take turns to share five facts about who you are. * Who do you think you are? Write a paragraph to describe yourself under these four headings: * My physical characteristics * My personal characteristics * Who I live with * My beliefs, hopes and dreams. * Suppose one religion. How do you think belonging to this religion could affect the young people see themselves and behave? Explain your ideas to a classmate. ### Text Description * What sort of a person do you think you are? This is not an easy question to answer. There are, however, some things we can describe with some certainty: * Our physical characteristics - what we look like. * Our personal characteristics - the way that we act and feel. * Who we live with, our families or people who raised us. * Our beliefs, hopes and dreams. * The page contains several cartoon-like illustrations in circular shapes. The images show different people's faces, and some are engaged in activities, such as singing, playing football, or spending time with family. * Our hopes and dreams help us to make decisions and plan for the future. #### Building Self-Esteem * How we see and understand ourselves affects our sense of self-esteem. Self-esteem is how we value ourselves. When we have positive self-esteem, we are able to value our strengths and efforts. We learn from our mistakes and accept that life can be difficult at times, but we continue to build a better future for ourselves. Understanding how we are unique people with a rich heritage helps to build this sense of self-esteem. #### Our Uniqueness * Every person is unique – we are all individuals, different from one another. In Jamaica we live in a multicultural society and our uniqueness combines a mix of Eastern and Western cultures, religions, and ethnic groups. We all have different physical features, different beliefs and different religious practices. These differences have given us a rich heritage and help us to be tolerant and understanding of each other.
