## Corporate culture in Russia - Hierarchical, bureaucratic, attached to procedures: this is what defines corporate culture in Russia. - Decisions usually take a long time to be taken, especially since the fear of making mistakes prevents employees from taking initiatives. - Very few Russians speak foreign languages. Unless you work in a large international company, you are unlikely to be surrounded by bilingual or multilingual colleagues. So it's better to use Russian language. ## Working conditions - In Russia, every employee works 40 hours a week, but the maximum duration is 54 hours. ## Direct communication - Russians are very pragmatic: they like to get straight to the point, and while they are very courteous, they don't bother with endless courtesies. - They may also just listen to you while remaining impassive. This does not indicate a lack of interest; they just pay close attention to your speech and then question you. - However, taken out of the professional context, the Russians become very demonstrative. - They also prefer direct communication: face to face is preferred to electronic or telephone exchanges. ## Hierarchy and egalitarianism - In Russia, the hierarchy is well defined and must be respected. Supervisors make the big decisions and then have them implemented by the subordinates. - Once the decisions are made, they are indisputable. - However, there is a form of respect towards the oldest members of the company: they are the only ones authorized to intervene in decision-making, which shows a proof of respect because in general, managers prefer to organize meetings with people of the same status. ## Formalism and discretion - Relations within the company are generally very formal: we do not talk about our private life. - Russians are very discreet, even when it comes to praising someone for their work: it is done in private and not front of other employees.
