| TT ® Chapter Eight Being tolerant Introduction In this chapter, you will learn how to be tolerant as you face day to day challenges. You will also learn about physical, health, and psychological effects ansing from unaddressed challenges. This chapter will also expose you to other people’s life experiences so as to learn from them as you strive to solve various challenges resulting from daily life activities. Acts of tolerance Tolerance is the ability to bear with what other people say or do even if you do not agree with them. In this section, you will learn to recognize other people’s behaviour and attitudes that may be different from yours due to family backgrounds, religious beliefs, or race. It is important to recognize and respect other people’s beliefs, ideologies, and perspectives even if they are different from ours. That will enable us to have many friends. Consider the following situations: (i) | When you hear the church bell ringing at 6 a.m. (ii) When you hear the adhan call to prayer at 5 a.m. (iii) Some members in your study group hold conversations in their vernacular language without considering your presence. (iv) Apupil seated next to you in class is getting into mischief and talking aloud. Read the following conversation and answer the questions that follow. Kadoda: How are you, Mwanalomi? Mwanalomi: I’m very fine, Kadoda. How are you? Kadoda: I’m fine! How is your class? Mwanalomi: Frankly speaking, | can’t tolerate being in that class. | wish | could be transferred to another class. | | CIVIC & MORAL STD 5 FINAL.indd 99 @ 2021/08/04 15:44 | | | TT ® Kadoda: Why so, Mwanalomi? Your class is doing very well academically! Mwanalomi: Oh, yes! However, some pupils are very mischievous. Kadoda: Oh, come on, Mwanalomi! Is that the reason for you being unhappy? Mwanalomi: So, don’t you see it as a problem? Kadoda: Mischievous pupils are everywhere, even in our class. Usually, we tell them to stop their bad behaviour. If they continue, the class monitor reports them to the class teacher. Mwanalomi: Ooo! So, is it possible to study in the same class with such mischievous pupils? Kadoda: Yes! It is important to advise them rather than segregating them; in the end, they will become responsible pupils. 1. What is it that annoys Mwanalomi in the class? 2. What advice did Kadoda give to Mwanalomi? 3. | Whathave you learnt in relation to tolerance from the conversation? 2.2 amp Discuss with your fellow pupils the importance of tolerance. Some challenges arise as a consequence of being sexually harassed, oppressed, ridiculed, and discriminated against due to social, economic, political, religious, or racial backgrounds. In order to solve those challenges, you need tolerance and | | CIVIC & MORAL STD 5FINAL.indd 100 @ 2021/08/04 15:44 | | || ® perseverance. Dilasi was not happy with Jefu’s situation. Dilasi explained Jefu’s problem to Jefu’s parents. Jefu’s parents asked Jefu to persevere with the situation and start going to school. They also encouraged Jefu not to lose hope and work hard so that he can support the family in the future. However, Jefu did not have any hope for his future. With the support from teachers, his parents continued to encourage Jefu to resume studies. Finally, Jefu took the advice and agreed to go back to school. Some of the physical effects could be bodily pain, which can lead to disability and paralysis. Additionally, one can develop peptic ulcers or high blood pressure which will affect his/her ability to work efficiently. Psychological effects Psychologically, one can develop fear, inconfidence, and shock. One is affected psychologically when he or she fails to make the right decision. If such a condition is not addressed immediately, it can be fatal. Psychological effects make the person unable to address challenges because of feeling powerless. The person is likely to attribute his or her condition to people around as the cause of the problem. If a pupil is affected psychologically, his or her academic performance will also be affected. Such a pupil may decide to stop going to school due to the belief that his problems cannot be solved. Read the following story and answer the questions that follow. Bupe is a Standard Five girl at Songwe Primary School. She lived happily with her parents. Her father was a farmer, producing food and cash crops. Her mother was keeping poultry. Their family income was enough to sustain their life. Since Bupe was the only girl in the family, her parents loved her and provided her with almost everything that she needed. One day, they boarded a bus fo visit their relatives in Sange Village, which is in lleje District, Songwe Region. On the way, one of the front wheels of the bus bursted, causing a fatal accident. Bupe lost both parents. Bupe sustained some injuries and was rushed to hospital. After the burial of her parents, Bupe felt very lonely. She could no longer concentrate on her studies. As a result, she did not do well in primary school leaving examinations. Therefore, she stayed in the village with her grandparents, and that marked the end of her many dreams. | | CIVIC & MORAL STD 5FINAL.indd 105 @ 2021/08/04 15:44 | | Why did Bupe despair? 2. QNIE Activity 5 Discuss with your fellow pupils how you will assist a pupil who is psychologically affected. Drawing on the experience of others to address challenges It is important to recognize that challenges are part of life and that you are not the first to face challenges. Therefore, do not despair when you face challenges. Life has to continue. Other people faced similar challenges, and they managed to address them. Hence, it is a good idea to look for such people and use their experience to deal with your challenges. There are elders in the community who have a lot of experience in handling difficult situations; consult them. Teachers or counsellors at your school are helpful resources, too. In addition, think about how you can use your parents or guardians to address your challenges. Involve your parents or guardians in dealing with the challenges facing your family. | | CIVIC & MORAL STD 5FINAL.indd 106 @ 2021/08/04 15:44 | | || TTT ® oe || Read the following conversation and answer the questions that follow.
