# Blood Part 1 - RBC Blood consists of four main things: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Blood is classified as a tissue. ## Red Blood Cells * What is red blood cells? * Make up almost half of our blood by volume. * Often referred to as RBC. * The role of the red blood cell is to carry oxygen from the lungs to our body's tissues. * Contains a red pigment called hemoglobin which combines oxygen to become oxyhemoglobin. Then, once those red blood cells have traveled around the body to the tissues, the oxyhemoglobin can split back into hemoglobin and oxygen again. ## Adaptation of Red Blood Cells * They don't have a nucleus. This means there's more space for hemoglobin and oxygen. * Shape like a bi-concave disk. This gives them a large surface area for absorbing oxygen. **(Diagram):** A simple drawing of a red blood cell, shaped like a bi-concave disk.
