# Research & Learning ## How to Avoid Plagiarism ### What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, print or electronic form, is covered under this definition. Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional. Under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence. ### Examples of plagiarism * Copying word-for-word from a source text without using quotation marks and acknowledgement. * Paraphrasing materials from a source text without acknowledgement. * Using ideas or results from a source text without acknowledgement. * Submitting someone else's work in part or in whole as your own. * Allowing someone else to copy your work. ### How to avoid plagiarism * Take effective notes, being sure to indicate in your notes which ideas are your own and which come from your sources. * When writing, clearly identify all ideas and words that come from someone else. * Know how to appropriately quote and paraphrase source materials. * When in doubt, cite! ### Consequences of plagiarism * Plagiarism is a serious academic offense that can result in severe penalties, such as a failing grade on the assignment, suspension from the university, or even expulsion. * Plagiarism can also damage your reputation and make it difficult to find employment after graduation. ### Resources to help you avoid plagiarism * The Purdue OWL: [https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research\_and\_citation/avoiding\_plagiarism/index.html](https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/avoiding_plagiarism/index.html) * The Harvard Guide to Using Sources: [https://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/](https://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/) * Your professor or TA ### Conclusion Plagiarism is a serious issue that can have significant consequences.
