Summary
This document provides instructions and examples for constructing different types of honeycomb weaves, such as single ridge, double ridge, and Brighton's honeycomb. The examples include diagrams that aid in understanding the processes. The document also explains the concept of "Longest Float" used in Brighton's honeycomb construction.

# Honeycomb Weaves ## Honeycomb Weaves - In Honeycomb weaves, threads form ridges and hollows to give a cell-like appearance on the fabric surface. - The warp and weft threads float freely on either side of the fabric, giving a rough structure to the fabric. Both these properties of the structure make the fabric highly moisture absorbent. - Honeycomb weaves are mainly used as towels, bedcovers and quilts. ## Types of Honeycomb Weaves - Honeycomb weaves are classified as: - Ordinary Honeycombs: - Single Ridge Honeycomb - Double Ridge Honeycomb - Brighton's Honeycomb - The ordinary Honeycombs give cellular effect on either side of the fabric, whereas in Brighton's Honeycomb cellular effect is only produced on one side of the fabric. ## (i) Single Ridge Honeycomb ### Example 1 **Construct a single ridge honeycomb on 8 threads** **Solution:** - First, make a diagonal line. - Make another diagonal line leaving one box from the top left-hand corner. - Now fill the two opposite diamond spaces, either side ones or up and down ones. A diagram is shown demonstrating these steps. ### Example 2 **Construct two repeats of 12 thread single ridge honeycomb.** A diagram is shown demonstrating the solution. ### Example 3 **Construct 16 thread single ridge honeycomb.** A diagram is shown demonstrating the solution. ## (ii) Double Ridge Honeycomb ### Example 1 **Construct 16 thread double ridge honeycomb.** **Solution:** - Make a double diagonal line leaving one box from the center. - Make another double diagonal line from the top left-hand corner. - Now fill either of the two opposite pairs of diamond spaces. A diagram is shown demonstrating these steps. ### Example 2 **Construct 24 thread double ridge honeycomb.** A diagram is shown demonstrating the solution. ### Example 3 **Construct two repeats of 14 thread double ridge honeycomb.** A diagram is shown demonstrating the solution. ## (2) Brighton's Honeycomb - It is a combination of single ridge and double ridge honeycombs. - Brighton's Honeycomb is woven on a straight draft rather than a pointed one. - The number of threads required to complete a Brighton's Honeycomb should always be in multiples of four. - In order to construct Brighton's Honeycomb a term called as Longest Float is found out: **Longest Float = No. of Threads / 2 -1** ## Construction of Brighton's Honeycomb ### Example 1 **Construct Brighton's Honeycomb on 16 threads.** **Solution:** - **Longest Float = (16/2) - 1 = 7** - A double diagonal line is formed by leaving one box between them from one corner. - From the other corner a single diagonal line is formed. - From the double row, leave 7 boxes upward and from the 8th box fill 7 boxes outward. - From the double row leave 7 boxes downward and from the 8th box fill 7 boxes outward. - Add marks to these lines in a diamond order. - Starting from both the double row bases, add 7 marks outwards. - From these bases fill in the order of a diamond. A series of diagrams show the construction of a 16-thread Brighton's honeycomb. ### Example 2 **Construct Brighton's Honeycomb on 20 threads.** **Solution:** - **Longest Float = (20/2) - 1 = 9** A diagram is shown demonstrating the solution. ### Example 3 **Construct two repeats of 12 threads Brighton's Honeycomb.** **Solution:** - **Longest Float = (12/2) - 1 = 5** A diagram is shown demonstrating the solution. ## Fabric Effect of Honeycomb Weaves - A diagram is shown demonstrating a 16-thread single ridge honeycomb. - A diagram is shown demonstrating a 16-thread double ridge honeycomb. - A diagram is shown demonstrating a 16-thread Brighton's honeycomb.
