PRINCIPLES OF GEOGRAPHY POPULATION BACHELORS OF SCIENCES HONS IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE BSSI 11033 FIRST YEAR FIRST SEMESTER Ms. Chinthani Senavirathna B.A. (Sp) in Geography, M.Sc. in DRRD Department of Indigenous Social Sciences Faculty of Indigenous Social Sciences and Management Studies GAMPAHA WICKRAMARACHCHI UNIVERSITY OF INDIGENOUS MEDICINE © POPULATION  Population, in human biology, is the whole number of inhabitants occupying an area (such as a country or the world) and continually being modified by increases (births and immigrations) and losses (deaths and emigrations).  The world’s population is more than three times larger than it was in the mid-twentieth century. GAMPAHA WICKRAMARACHCHI UNIVERSITY OF INDIGENOUS MEDICINE © POPULATION GROWTH  Population growth is the increase in the number of humans on Earth.  The global human population reached 8.0 billion on the 15th of November 2022.  Until the time of Napoleon, there were less than 1 billion people on Earth at any one time. Since the Second World War, we have been adding a billion people to the global population every 12-15 years. Our population is more than double today what it was in 1970. GAMPAHA WICKRAMARACHCHI UNIVERSITY OF INDIGENOUS MEDICINE © IMPORTANT FACTS  Population in Sri Lanka?  Most populous countries?  Available at: https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ GAMPAHA WICKRAMARACHCHI UNIVERSITY OF INDIGENOUS MEDICINE © POPULATION DISTRIBUTION  Population distribution means the pattern of where people live.  Sparsely populated places tend to be difficult places to live. Ex: Antarctica - Cold temperatures Lack of vegetation Geographical Isolation  Places which are densely populated are habitable environments EX: Western Europe - Flat relief USA Favorable climate Availability of natural resources Freshwater  Population distribution is also uneven within a country. GAMPAHA WICKRAMARACHCHI UNIVERSITY OF INDIGENOUS MEDICINE © POPULATION DENSITY  Population density is the concentration of individuals within a species in a specific geographic area.  People per sq. km of land area.  Data is available at: https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EN.POP.DNST GAMPAHA WICKRAMARACHCHI UNIVERSITY OF INDIGENOUS MEDICINE © REFERENCE  reliefweb.int.
