STAMP ACT Backfired Anyone who uses paper protested Lawyers, publishers, land owners, merchants and even gamblers who use paper dice  It united Americans in opposition against all direct taxation 1: The Real Stamp 2: As seen by Americans British Continue March 1765 Parliament issues: QUARTERING ACT Americans will provide British troops with FOOD & SHELTER BOSTON August 1765, American opposition group SONS OF LIBERTY Began to challenge British government A secret society included members from all states & all walks of life. Founded to protect rights/liberty in all 13 states. Their methods were very aggressive NEW YORK 1766 British send troops to enforce QUARTERING ACT Provincial Assembly refused to comply BRITISH dismiss BOTH New York Governor & Assembly British Realize Their policy was NOT working Parliament retracts the STAMP ACT But Parliament continues targeting Colonial Economy 1767 Parliament: Imposed additional taxes on imports Established in Boston the: Colonial Board of Customs Commissioners PURPOSE:  Stop colonial smuggling  End corruption of local officials TOWNSHEND DUTIES 1767: New series of taxes and regulations BOSTON REACTS: 1) Boycott goods subject to these duties 2) Urged Americans to buy local products 3) Sons of Liberty harass British agents BRITISH REACTION: Sent War ships to Boston to support custom officers British troops arrive in Boston 1768 Camp at Boston Common!! Frequent clashes with Bostonians escalate The first armed Confrontations resulted in the: BOSTON MASSACRE BOSTON MASSACRE 1770 Actually, not a massacre 5 killed But it gave the revolution its first martyrs PATRIOTS used the incident to fuel Hostility against Britain To ease tension & Avoid further hostility British withdraw troops from Boston Retract import duties except duty on Tea Why? Main Reason Save British East India Company from bankruptcy Getting rid of the massive amount of tea stored in its warehouses WHY was the company that important? Company served British Colonialism in India and China Company engaged in SLAVE labor/trade Transported enslaved people to Southeast Asia; India and the Americas TEA ACTS gave East India Co. a monopoly on Trading in Tea by:  Bypassing American middlemen  Selling directly to selected colonial agents  Undercutting the price of illegal tea Smuggling was a lifeline for Bostonians AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE: If Colonies agree to Tea Acts, they will be Admitting Parliament's right of taxation THEIR RESERVATIONS: What/who will stop Britain from collecting More damaging taxes? New price was actually LOWER than illegal smuggled tea But that was NO LONGER THE ISSUE British policy was regarded as a systematic Scheme against American liberties You thought it is over?!
