# BAR-CHART (GANTT CHART) PLANNING TECHNIQUE By: Asst. Prof. Dr. Hassan Issa Abdul-Kareem Civil Engineering Dept.- Engineering College- Mustansiriyah University ## What is a Gantt Chart? A Gantt chart, commonly used in project management, is one of the most popular and useful ways of showing activities (tasks) displayed against time. On the left of the chart is a list of the activities and along the top is a suitable time scale. Each activity is represented by a bar; The position and length of the bar reflects the start date, duration and end date of the activity. | Task Name | Dec '08 | Jan 09 | Feb '09 | Mar '09 | Apr '09 | May '09 | Jun '09 | Jul '09 | Aug | |:---|:---|:---|:---|:---|:---|:---|:---|:---|:---| | Planning | | | | | | | | | | | Research | | | | | | | | | | | Design | | | | | | | | | | | Implementation | | | | | | | | | | | Follow Up | | | | | | | | | | ## Benefits of Using Bar-Chart (Gantt Chart) Technique for Project Planning - **Clarity:** Gantt chart has the ability to show and clarify multiple tasks and timelines. - **Communication:** It is a visual method to help project team members understand task progress. - **Motivation:** Gantt charts offer project teams the ability to focus work at the front of or at the tail end of a task timeline. - **Coordination:** Project managers use these charts to break down projects into manageable sets of tasks. - **Creativity:** The use of Gantt charts often encourages new partnerships that might not have evolved under traditional task assignment systems. - **Time Management:** Time scheduling is considered as one of the major benefits of Gantt charts. - **Flexibilty:** It offers a view of project which can help team members adjust changes. - **Manageability:** By using Gantt charts, project managers can make more focused, effective decisions about resources and timetables. - **Efficiency:** Visualizing resource usage during projects allows managers to make better use of people, places, and things. - **Accountability:** Using Gantt charts during critical projects allows both project managers and participants to track team progress. ## Disadvantages of Using Bar-Chart (Gantt Chart) Technique for Project Planning - They can become very complex. - The length of the bar does not indicate the amount of work. - They all the time need to be updated. - Difficult to see on one sheet of paper. - The Critical path (C.P) cannot be clearly indicated. ## Ex.1/ Using the details shown below, build a bar-chart to find the project's total duration. | Activity | Duration (days) | Followed Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 3 | B,C | | B | 3 | D,E | | C | 5 | F | | D | 4 | H | | E | 5 | K | | F | 3 | K,G | | G | 6 | I,J | | H | 3 | | | I | 2 | M | | J | 11 | | | K | 6 | | | M | | | [Insert image of Gantt chart showing Project total duration is 30 days] ## Ex.2/ Find the project's total duration and date of completion (assume the project start date is 1st of December 2014). Use the following details to build the Gantt chart: | Activity | Duration (weeks) | Following Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 2 | B,C,D | | B | 3 | G | | C | 6 | E | | D | 7 | F | | E | 3 | L | | F | 3 | J | | G| 2 | M | | H | 1 | K | | I | 3 | K | | J | 3 | K | | K | 5 | K | | M | 6 | -- | [Insert image of Gantt chart showing Project total duration is 20 weeks. The estimated completion date is st of May 2015. ] ## Ex.3/ Find the project's total duration and date of completion (assume the project start date is 15th of March 2015). Use the following details to build the Gantt chart: | Activity | Duration (months) | Following Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 3 | B,C | | B | 5 | E | | C | 3 | D,F | | D | 7 | I,J | | E | 10 | K | | F | 7 | I,J | | G | 11 | M | | H | 11 | M | | I | 7 | L | | J | 3 | N | | K | 4 | -- | | L | 8 | 0 | | M | 7 | -- | [Insert image of Gantt chart showing Project total duration is 40 months. The estimated completion date is 15th of July 2018. ] ## Ex.4/ A project, its activities are shown below, was started on (20/1/2014). Use the Gantt chart technique to find its estimated delivery date. | Activity | Duration (weeks) | Following Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 3 | B,D,E | | B | 4 | C | | C | 4 | I | | D | 2 | F | | E | 3 | G | | F | 3 | H | | G | 4 | I | | H | 4 | -- | | I | 5 | K | | K | 6 | -- | [Insert image of Gantt chart showing Total Duration = 22 weeks, Data Complete is on 7/7/2014, C.P. = A, B, C, I, k] ## If the project shown above had a delay of (2 weeks) after (6 working weeks), what would be its new delivery date? [Insert image of Gantt chart showing Total Duration = 24 weeks, Data Complete is on 10/4/2014, C.P. = A, B, C, I, k] ## Quiz 1-A/ Find the project total Duration. Use the Following details to build the Gantt Chart: | Activity| Duration (Weeks) | Following Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 4 | B | | B | 6 | C | | C | 2 | D,E | | D | 3 | F | | E | 5 | G | | F | 2 | I | | G | 3 | I | | I | 6 | -- | ## Quiz 1-B/ Find the project total Duration and date complete (assume the project date 19/11/2014). Use the Following details to build the Gantt Chart: | Activity | Duration (Weeks) | Following Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 2 | B | | B | 1 | C | | C | 3 |D,E | | D | 4 | F | | E | 5 | G | | F | 3 | I | | G | 6 | -- | | I | 4 | -- | ## Quiz 2-A/ find the total duration and the critical path for the following table of a project using bar chat (Gantt chart) method: | Activity| Duration (month) | Following Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 2 | B | | B | 1 | D | | C | 3 | E | | D | 4 | F | | E | 5 | G | | F | 3 | H | | G| 6 | -- | | H | 4 | -- | [Insert image of Gantt chart showing T.D. = 15, C.P. = CEFH] ## Quiz 3-A/ Find the project total Duration and date complete (assume the project date 20/3/2014). Use the Following details to build the Gantt Chart: | Activity | Duration (Weeks)| Following Activity | |:---|:---|:---| | A | 4 | F | | B | 5 | N,D | | C | 3 | C | | D | 2 | 0 | | E | 5 | I | | F | 6 | I | | N | 2 | I | | O | 5 | G | | G | 3 | S | | S | 4 | -- | [Insert image of Gantt chart showing Total Duration= 24 weeks, Data Complete is on 8/9/2014, C.P. = B, D, C, O, I, G, S ]
