Purpose: To provide guidance on using a Type III Life Safety Harness and a Mobile Fall Arrester with Self-locking Function Ladder Belay System during training exercises and ladder maintenance. B. Scope: This information is provided to all personnel covered under the Firefighters’ labor agreement. C. Author: The Deputy Chief of Operations or designee, following the guidelines set forth in the contract revision and review of this information. II. RESPONSIBILITY A. All employees are responsible for complying with these SOP’s. B. All supervisory employees are responsible for enforcing the work policies and taking the appropriate positive disciplinary action when necessary. III. POLICY A. Personnel shall wear a Type III Life Safety Harness and be on a Mobile Fall Arrester with Self Locking Function Ladder Belay System when climbing any aerial ladder set to an angle greater than 45 degrees during any training exercise and maintenance. 479.00 B. Truck Company Aerial Ladder Safety Belay Page 2 of 2 All equipment shall be inspected before use and at the end of each use. In addition, the harness will be inspected in accordance with the department’s regular schedule for equipment that is assigned to the apparatus C. Inspection of each rope that is used shall be documented on a rope log. D. All ropes and connectors shall be rigged by a competent person, who has received instruction on the rigging of the system. E. All rigging shall be inspected by a 2nd competent person who was not involved in the initial rigging of the equipment. F. Supervisors shall coordinate with the Technical Rescue Team to have the belay system inspected annually.
