# What is Science? **Figure out...** 1. Read the steps that scientists follow when they study the world, put them in order. **Steps scientists follow:** 1. **Share ideas:** Scientists share their ideas with other scientists. Other scientists might or might not agree with them. 2. **Observe nature and formulate questions:** Scientists observe nature and formulate questions based on their observations. 3. **Formulate hypotheses:** Scientists formulate hypotheses (possible explanations for a problem). They test their hypothesis with experiments. 4. **Design and conduct experiments:** Scientists design and conduct experiments to prove, modify or reject their hypotheses. 5. **Develop models and theories:** Scientists develop models and theories and revise them constantly. 6. **Analyze data and draw conclusions:** Scientists analyze experimental data and draw conclusions. 7. **Gather information:** Scientists gather information that other scientists have published about the problem. # The Characteristics of Science * **Science is big business:** Countries spend millions of dollars on military research, as well as on research into problems that affect the developed world. Before the Ebola virus disease reached Europe, scientists didn't do any research into possible treatments and vaccines for Ebola. The virus originated in Africa, and it's a very infectious and lethal illness. * **Scientific understanding continues to change:** For example, Alfred Wegener believed that millions of years ago the continent of Africa connected to South America. His studies produced evidence on the movement of the continents - our current knowledge shows that it wasn't the continents that moved, but the tectonic plates of the lithosphere. * **Science answers questions:** We revise ideas about the natural world through a process called the scientific method.
