Sources of Broodstock ▪ Sexually-mature milkfish are available only from the wild ▪ However, catching of wild milkfish breeders (sabalo) has always been prohibited in order to conserve the breeding stock ▪ There is no other option but to develop breeders using sub-adult milkfish from grow-out farms ▪ Captive milkfish undergo first sexual maturation and spawning at about 5 years of age, and thereafter spawns several times during the year ▪ Spawns year round, but in some parts of the country, spawning is more intense from March to November Broodstock Development and Management 2.
