Diagnostic applications of Mabs 1 ELISA 1 Learning objectives • Learn about the main concept(s) of ELISA technique. • Learn about the types of ELISA. 2 • Monoclonal Antibodies are used in various clinical and diognostic applications such as: 1) The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA): is a test that uses antibodies and color change to identify a substance. Performing an ELISA involves at least one antibody with specificity for a particular antigen. It is used in measuring hormone values in serum and/or plasma sample. 2) Immunoblot (Western blot): It is also used to visualize proteins that have been separated by SDS-PAGE (gel electrophoresis). 3) Blood group test 3 * CONCEPTS Types of ELISA E = Horseradish peroxidase S= Tetramethyl Benzidine http://www.slideshare.net/priyankapathania37/antibody-based-techniques-46418583 4 Learning outcomes • Monoclonal antibodies are used in diagnostic techniques that require sensitivity and accuracy of results. • ELISA technique relies on monoclonal antibodies to detect antigens/protein molecules in a biological samples (blood serum/plasma). 5
