# Religion Exam Review: ## Divisions of the Bible - **Bible (Greek: biblia):** Library of 73 books total. - **Old Testament:** - 46 books: story of God's love for the Hebrew - 3 divisions: - **Law (first 5 books of the Bible, known as torah or Pentateuch):** - **Prophets - writings** - **Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical Books (7 disputed books in the OT):** Is accepted as a part of holy scripture - **New Testament:** - 27 books: Deals with the person of Jesus as he lived and now lives (Church) - **Gospels (4 books written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, John):** - **Acts of Apostles (1 book)** - **Letters (mostly written by St. Paul - 21 books):** - **Revelation (last book - 1 book)** ## Types of Writings (Literary Forms): - **Myth:** A mythological story focused on Gods and/or heroes - **List:** A set of Norms, events, words (all in a set order) - **Prophecy:** Prediction under God's influence of direction/vision, usually tells us of future events (given to prophets) - **Law:** Rules or moral principles, telling how to behave or live - **History:** Record of past events; in order - **Letter:** Message (written often personal or subject that needs to be said) # Religion Exam Review: ## Sacraments - **Sacrament of Initiation:** - Baptism - Confirmation - Eucharist - **Sacrament of Healing:** - Anointing of the sick - Reconciliation/Penance (or Communion) - **Sacraments at the service of communion:** - Matrimony - Holy Order **Baptism:** First sacrament of Christian initiation - Frees us from original sin. **The Eucharist:** Second sacrament - Blood and Body of Christ, wine and bread (meal) **Confirmation:** 3rd sacrament, deepens and strengthens the gifts received of baptism. **Sacrament of bearing:** **Reconciliation or Penance:** Acknowledge for God's unconditional forgiveness - **Conversion:** Asking for others - **Confession:** - **Celebration:** **Anointing of the sick (AKA, Last rites or Extreme unction):** - Ritual of healing (physical illness, world, spiritual sickness) - Sacrament of healing **Marriage:** Sacraments of service - Reflects family values and God's through love (husband and wife) **Holy Orders:** Sacrament of service - Becoming a priest. # Religion Exam Review! ## Types of Writings, part 2: - **Parable:** Story that teaches; moral of religious truth. - **Proverb:** Short saying (express truth or teaching), often said as an instruction. - **Sermon:** A serious speech; (thematic). - **Drama:** Story / dialogue of people's lives. - **Poetry:** Poems, inner feelings (writers personal feelings). ## Truths in the Bible: Literal vs Contextual: - **Literal:** Exact meaning (based with facts and definition), every word for word (every sentence is to be read exactly as it says). - **Contextual:** Words put in context; considering (culture, time, place). - Try to interpret and understand what authors were saying at the time. - Should we read Bible literal or contextually? - Generally, we should read contextually (trying to understand) but some books must be read literally. ## Truths in the Bible: - **Religious:** The Bible is (primarily) this type - **Moral:** Shows us a difference between right or wrong, like in a way to be closer to God; example: (Thou shall not kill) 5th commandment. # Religion Exam Review: ## Truths in the Bible: - **Symbolic:** Stories like myths/parables to live a good life, deeper thinking to fully understand. - **Proverbial:** Truth communicated through wisdom sayings/experiences. - **Historical:** Most accurate history of Hebrew people that we know (Hebrew Scriptures), information on its people (2000 BC - 100 CE). - **Scientific:** Bibles show scientific facts when it was written. ## 2 important principles: - **Inspiration:** Holy spirit inspired the Bible writers to write what is true and good. - **Inerrancy:** As a result, can lead to minor errors in dates, names, etc. (NO ERROR IN MAIN MESSAGE!) ## The Beatitudes: - Beatitudes are a teaching from Jesus. - Means "Blessing". Starts with "Blessed are those..." - Grant to fulfill the 10 commandments. 1. **Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.:** - Admit own strength and weaknesses - Don't think they are better 2. **Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted:** - Are sensitive, show compassion (sympathy, respect) 3. **Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth:** - Don't force others to change - Don't make others feel stupid - Do not try to get their way through physical/ emotional abilities # Religion Exam Review! ## The Beatitudes: 4. **Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied:** - Stand up for those who are being treated badly/unfairly. - Stand up for justice (fairness). 5. **Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy:** - Forgiving (show mercy to others, give second chances). - Not judging. 6. **Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God:** - Committed (love ones, friends, family, etc.). - Always caring/supportive. 7. **Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons and daughters of God.** Example: Soldiers. - Bring people together. - Peace and world justice. 8. **Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven:** - Not afraid! Standing up, even if they may get hurt. - Willing to sacrifice and risk for justice. # Religion Exam Review: ## 5 Forms of Prayer: - **Adoration:** Worship God with love and great respect. - **Blessing:** To ask/call for a divine favor. - **Thanksgiving:** To give thanks for anything. - **Petition:** A solemn request to God. - **Intercession:** To ask God to be in our lives. - **Praise:** To glorify God and express your love. ## Components to Prayer: - Trying to be patient and wait. - Listening: We must be open to hear God. - Scripture: Reading the Bible can help us understand what God wants us to do and live. - Done Daily: Focused on God (not selfish). ## Vocation: - Vocation means "to call" (call from God). - Priesthood - Single hood - Marriedhood (married life) - Religious life
