I know why food insecurity occurs in a wealthy, developed countries like Canada. Quick note before we start: What is Food Security? Food security and hunger are not the same thing, although they are closely related. People are hungry in Canada - but not like in countries where there is war or famine. In Canada, we are more food insecure. Food security and hunger are different in Canada than in developing countries. This is a huge, huge topic that is the subject to university degrees. We will taking just a small look this unit ….. What is Food Security? Food security defined as: Having ongoing access to enough nutritious, safe and affordable food for you and your family to meet their daily needs in a way that preserves dignity and personal preferences Causes of Food Insecurity - brainstorm In small groups, brainstorm reasons for food insecurity. Try to come up with reasons in each of these categories: political economic social familial environmental factors How do these influence household food security? What factors impact food security? Food insecurity includes everything from worrying about running out of food, to reducing food intake and going days without or with less food due to lack of money. These stories paint of picture of who is using food banks in Canada Despite what some believe, both working and unemployed Canadians are food insecure and visiting food banks. ○ Low paying work or inadequate benefits. Food Insecurity in Canada (2022) 7 million Canadians, or about 1 in 5, people in Canada reported going hungry between March 2020-2022. According to Statistics Canada, 1 in 7 Canadians are food insecure. 1,462, 795 Canadians visited a food bank in 2022 33.1% are children; 45.4% are single adult homes; 17.9% are single parent households; 8.9% are seniors. Each and every month, hundreds of thousands of Canadians access food banks to make ends meet. Our social positions have an impact on how much power and privilege we have Power and privilege impact our level of food access or security. Each ‘identity’ has a different level of power in society.
