Our point of departure is that no human being lives outside of society. An individual’s social body is categorized and trained into socially approved roles and practices that are informed by cultural, political and historical conditions and that influence and are influenced by one’s perceived gender, appearance, age, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, and class or caste. 9 Photo: Christine Hewitt/Adapted from Every Body Yoga/Workman Publishing Photo by Alonso Reyes on Unsplash Are these social bodies? Yes! Bodies create meaning and are created by our thinking (meaning) of society, culture, history, nature, etc. 10 Why This Matters in Kinesiology? Fundamental to this lecture (and to the entire course) is the question of: How do we know what we know? What meanings do we invest into our and other people’s bodies, and why? Who do we construct as having a good body? Who do we construct as having a bad body? We must be vigilant about how we construct meaning of body, society, culture, history, etc. so we can disrupt that which is not serving humanity well 11 After this course, you will: Understand the concept of social construction as it pertains to physical activity, the body and health. Understand how power relations, privilege and stereotyping generate and perpetuate inequalities and prejudices about human bodies with respect to hegemonic societal standards of health and performance. Critically reflect on the nature of scientific knowledge as it pertains to the study of physical activity, body and health. Analyze physical activity, including sport, and health as social and historical institutions influenced by material conditions of life. Develop and demonstrate university-level reading comprehension, critical evaluation, and writing skills. 12 It is high likely that “We should never after taking this underestimate the course you will be power of a able to make committed group positive changes of people to effect in Kinesiology and major social in body, physical changes.” activity, and health practices.
