- KINE1000 explores the social body as a key to understanding physical culture, health and human rights
- Emphasis on the social body being shaped by societal norms and cultural, political, and historical conditions
- The course examines how these factors influence individuals' perceived identities and their experiences in relation to gender, appearance, age, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, and class or caste
Course Goals
- Understand the concept of social construction as it relates to physical activity, the body, and health
- Analyze how power relations, privilege, and stereotyping contribute to inequalities and prejudices surrounding human bodies
- Critically evaluate scientific knowledge in the context of physical activity, body and health
- Examine physical activity, including sports and health, as social and historical institutions influenced by material conditions
- Develop university-level reading comprehension, critical evaluation, and writing skills
Course Delivery
- In-person lectures and tutorials
- Tutorials are mandatory and begin the week of September 16
- Students must know their tutorial number, section, and tutorial leader's name for all tests and exams
- Lecture slides and recordings are provided to supplement in-person attendance
- All students must have a valid YU-Card and present it for in-tutorial tests, mind maps, and exams
Communication
- Consult the eClass page and course outline before emailing
- Emails should be directed to the tutorial leader first, and then to [email protected] for urgent issues
- Emails should be professional, clear, and coherent
- Expect a response within a business day, emails sent after 4:30 pm or during the weekend will be answered the following business day

- The quiz must be completed with a perfect score to receive full credit (no partial marks)
